The paper reports the case of a previously healthy 4-year-old-girl who presented with pallor, fever and hepatosplenomegaly. Laboratory findings included pancytopenia, hypertriglyceridemia and hyperferritinemia. Initial diagnosis of kala-azar could not be confirmed because of the absence of clinical evidence, negativity of bone marrow aspiration or specific serology for visceral leishmaniasis. R...
The yield in cultures of bone marrow aspirations or biopsies was determined in 50 patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Most patients were febrile and had no identifiable source of infection. Concurrent stool, urine, and blood samples were also cultured. The bone marrow aspiration and biopsy procedures produced no complications and enabled a microbiological diagnosis to be made in 4...
BACKGROUND Bone marrow concentrate (BMC) is growing in popularity as an alternative treatment option in orthopaedics. The regenerative capacity of BMC has been linked to the number of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) present in the graft at the time of its clinical application. MSC counts in bone marrow aspirate (BMA) are affected by harvest technique, but controversy exists over which aspiration ...
Materials and Methods: BMA and BMB were performed on 50 patients. Criteria of inclusion included the main indications for performing this procedure, the availability of full medical records and patient consent. The patients had a male to female sex ratio of 1.6:1 and a wide age range from 4 years to 74 years. Results: In the present study, the main indications for bone marrow examination were c...
We present a case of tuberculosis-associated hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis in a 14-year-old girl. The patient presented with weight loss, malaise, fatigue, prolonged fever, and generalized lymphadenopathy. Laboratory investigation revealed pancytopenia (white blood cells, 2,020 cells/µL; hemoglobin, 10.2 g/dL; platelets, 52,000 cells/µL), hypertriglyceridemia (229 mg/dL), and hyperferritin...
The bone marrow microenvironment represents a "metastatic niche" in which prostate cancer cells may persist and evade cytotoxic therapy. In order to study the biology of prostate cancer dissemination, we have established a safe and efficient method for performing pubic bone marrow aspiration at the time of radical prostatectomy. We herein describe our experience with this technique.
Bone marrow aspiration is the preliminary investigation in Niemann Pick disease type A when enzyme assays and mutation studies are unavailable. We report an infant with typical phenotype and enzyme deficiency, but undetectable Niemann Pick cells in the bone marrow. A new mutation R542X in SMPD gene was also detected.
