The Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) is one of the most common human viruses, infecting more than 90% of the world’s adult population. In some individuals the interplay between EBV replication, latency and immune control can be disrupted and evokes prolonged proliferation of EBV-infected lymphocytes and their malignant transformation. Since its discovery as the first human tumor virus, EBV has been imp...

the immune responses that develop following epstien-barr virus (ebv) infection are complex and involve both humoral and to a greater extent cell-mediated immune mechanisms. to evaluate the immune response, flow cytometric analysis of the peripheral blood of six patients during the acute phase of ebv infection was performed. this analysis revealed a significant increase in the percentages and th...

Paraffin sections of an undifferentiated salivary gland carcinoma of lymphoepithelioma type, arising in a white (Greek) patient and confirmed by immunohistochemistry, were examined for the presence of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), using in situ hybridization to detect EBV-specific EBER1 message. Epstein-Barr virus was detected in malignant epithelial cells, but was not found in lymphoid stroma or i...

We studied seroprevalence and concentrations of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) antibodies in 147 pediatric patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and paired controls. The children with MS showed a near-complete seropositivity for EBV antibody against virus capsid antigen (98.6% vs 72.1% in controls, p = 0.001) but did not display serologic evidence for a recent EBV infection. EBV antibody concentratio...

Transfection of an Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-encoded plasmid containing EBER caused a substantial decrease in the level of plasmid containing EBV in Akata and Mutu Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) lines, but failed to do so in other BL lines. The results suggest that EBER could replace the role of EBV, but other EBV products also play a role in the growth of BL.

Latent viral infection has been implicated in the pathophysiology of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is known to be important in pulmonary fibrosis. The current authors hypothesised that EBV is associated with the pathogenesis of COPD. Sputum samples were collected from patients both during exacerbations of COPD and when stable. A control group of smokers ...

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) nuclear antigen 1 (EBNA1)--the one EBV antigen that is expressed in all EBV-associated malignancies--has long been thought to go undetected by the cell-mediated immune system. However, recent studies show that EBNA1 can be presented to both CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, making it a potential new target for immunotherapy of EBV-related cancers.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma, particulary tumors endemic to the Far East, commonly harbors Epstein-Barr virus. The detection of nuclear antigen associated with EBV and viral DNA in NPC cells have revealed that EBV can infect epithelial cells and is associated with transformation. Human papilloma virus is an epitheliotrophic oncogenic virus that has been detected in a variety of head and neck tu...

Infection with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) results in lifelong infection of B cells in the peripheral blood and in episodic shedding of virus from the oropharynx. We monitored patients treated with rituximab (anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody) and found that several had both no detectable B cells and no EBV in the blood but shed EBV from the throat. Although some models postulate that EBV traffics fro...

objective: assessment of subgingival human cytomegalovirus (hcmv) and epstein barr virus (ebv-1) in subjects with aggressive periodontitis. materials and methods: samples were obtained from plaques formed in subgingival regions of 26 aggressive periodontitis patients. all specimens were submitted to polymerase chain reaction in order to detect hcmv and ebv-1. results: hcmv and ebv-1 were observ...
