We show that a large class of non–metric, non–symplectic affine holonomies can be realized, uniformly and without case by case considerations, by Weyl connections associated to the natural AHS–structures on certain generalized flag manifolds.

We investigate the use of large-scale Automated Highway Systems, also called one-dimensional vehicle platoons, as a practical traffic mitigation solution. We review recent theoretical results related to vehicle platooning and discuss their implications on the scalability and safety of large-scale platoons. We also quantify the performance of different platoon control strategies through simulati...

This paper addresses the problem of recognizing complex objects in images. The proposed approach is based on a prototype-centered object representation which describes objects as sets of local features. During an evolutionary learning step the model is derived from a set of sample images. The proceeding of the training is measured with regard to the recognition rate as well as the coverage of t...

Many people have made suggestions about what is the "best" approach to consumer protection regulation. However, Professor Whitford thinks that there has not been enough thought given to the relative effectiveness of these suggested approaches. In his article Professor Whitford analyzes the effectiveness of various approaches for consumer protection regulation of one particular consumer transact...

In order to predict the interior noise of the automobile in the low and middle frequency band in the design and development stage, the hybrid FE-SEA model of an automobile was created using hybrid FE-SEA method. The modal density was calculated using analytical method and finite element method; the damping loss factors of the structural and acoustic cavity subsystems were also calculated with a...

This article presents a local control approach to linear vehicle platooning. Linear platoon systems are sets of vehicles that use local or global perception capabilities to form a train configuration, without any hard grip element. Public transportation is beginning to interest in platoon systems as a technological base to conceive new services. The main problem related to platoon system’s cont...

This study evaluates the effectiveness of state child safety seat laws in the United States. Data for all fifty states for the period 1975 to 1994 are used. Pooled time series analysis is employed to estimate a model of the rate of fatalities suffered by children ages 0-5 years as occupants in automobile crashes. The occupant fatality rate for children 6-11 years of age is used as a comparison ...

The design of pilot assisted wireless transmissions is considered from signal processing and information theoretical perspectives. A general pilot placement model is presented and related figures of merit discussed. A survey of recent pilot assisted transmission theory and techniques is provided.

This paper presents a method for analysis of automated highway throughput for AHS designs, including those with platooning. Simulation results are presented which show that increased information leads to higher throughput, and that a platooning design will have higher throughput than any individual vehicle design.
