Multiracial individuals are in the unique position of being able to categorize themselves as members of multiple racial groups. Drawing on self-categorization theory, we suggest that similarity to the minority ingroup depends on self-perceptions of physical appearance and connectedness to the minority ingroup. Moreover, we argue that similarity to the ingroup determines self-categorization as m...
This paper presents a method for 3D lip registration when tracking a face model from video and depth map data. The inner and outer lip contours are tracked in 2D using features obtained from Boosted Edge Learning (BEL). Given the lip contours and a reconstructed depth map, the 3D mouth region of a mesh is registered at each frame independently, accounting for the self occlusions of the lips tha...
This talk presents an attempt to unify sequential search and selection problems in the light of optimal stopping problems on strings. The basic model is as follows: Strings are generated by sequences of letters or other codes produced by independent draws from a given alphabet or another source. The law of drawing different letters or expressions may be time-invariant (stationary) or else depen...
The adaptive significance of learning is supported by studies showing its positive effects on mating behaviour, but they rarely go beyond fertilization success. Here we studied how learning contributes to qualitative reproductive investment, by testing the hypothesis that mating in the context that predicts male appearance has positive effects on female reproductive investment compared with uns...
The Renaissance was a cultural revolution that spread from Florence, in 1400, throughout Italy and into the rest of Europe. Its impetus was the philosophy of Humanism, which strove to resurrect and emulate the literature and art of the ancient Greeks and Romans. Artists had previously been limited to formulaic religious iconography. They now began to reproduce descriptions of classical painting...
Evidence from neurophysiological and psychological studies is coming together to shed light on how we represent and recognize objects. This review describes evidence supporting two major hypotheses: the first is that objects are represented in a mosaic-like form in which objects are encoded by combinations of complex, reusable features, rather than two-dimensional templates, or three-dimensiona...
A naturalistic experiment used an instrumented bicycle to gather proximity data from overtaking motorists. The relationship between rider position and overtaking proximity was the opposite to that generally believed, such that the further the rider was from the edge of the road, the closer vehicles passed. Additionally, wearing a bicycle helmet led to traffic getting significantly closer when o...
We present a comparison of a text-driven and a speech driven visual speech synthesiser. Both are trained using the same data and both use the same Active Appearance Model (AAM) to encode and re-synthesise visual speech. Objective quality, measured using correlation, suggests the performance of both approaches is close, but subjective opinion ranks the text-driven approach significantly higher.
In this study, we present a new multi-band image representation for improving AAM segmentation accuracy for illumination invariant face alignment. AAM is known to be very sensitive to the illumination variations. We have shown that edges, originating from object boundaries are far less susceptible to illumination changes. Here, we propose a contour selector which mostly collects contours origin...
