Background. Pharmacologically modulated dendritic cells (DCs) have been shown to restore tolerance in type II collagen-(CII-) induced arthritis (CIA). We examined the effect of dexamethasone (DXM) administration as a preconditioning agent, followed by an injection of lipopolysaccharide-(LPS-) stimulated and CII-loaded DCs on the CIA course. Methods. After CIA induction, mice pretreated with DXM...

We present [CII] observations of 20 strongly lensed dusty star forming galaxies at 2.1 < z < 5.7 using APEX and Herschel. The sources were selected on their 1.4 mm flux (S1.4mm > 20 mJy) from the South Pole Telescope survey, with far-infrared (FIR) luminosities determined from extensive photometric data. The [CII] line is robustly detected in 17 sources, all but one being spectrally resolved. E...

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients with early elevations of antibodies against collagen type II (CII) have a distinct acute onset phenotype, associated with cytokine induction by surface-bound anti-CII-containing immune complexes (ICs) and high C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR). Polymorphonuclear granulocytes (PMNs) and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) ...

ISO has enabled far-infrared spectroscopy of a variety of galaxies. Using the [CII] (158μm) and [OI](63μm) lines, we can characterize the physical conditions in the star-forming ISM. These observations also form the basis of our expectations for what the Herschel Space Observatory will observe for high redshift galaxies. While [CII] is suppressed in ULIRGs and normal galaxies with high dust tem...

PURPOSE Vitamin E analogues are potent novel anticancer drugs. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the cellular target by which these agents, represented by alpha-tocopoheryl succinate (alpha-TOS), suppress tumors in vivo, with the focus on the mitochondrial complex II (CII). EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN Chinese hamster lung fibroblasts with functional, dysfunctional, and reconstituted CII were...

OBJECTIVE Previous randomized controlled trials for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) with acid-soluble chicken and bovine type II collagen (CII) have produced conflicting results. This randomized, double-blind, controlled trial examined the therapeutic effect of bovine CII tablets in RA. METHODS CII tablets were prepared by adsorption onto a lactose base. Patients with a duration of RA ...

ATP-dependent proteases, like FtsH (HflB), recognize specific protein substrates. One of these is the CII protein, which plays a key role in the phage lysis-lysogeny decision. Here we provide evidence that the conserved C-terminal end of CII acts as a necessary and sufficient cis-acting target for rapid proteolysis. Deletions of this conserved tag, or a mutation that confers two aspartic residu...

BACKGROUND Signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 (Stat1) potently regulates gene expression after stimulation by certain cytokines involved in tumorigenesis and host defenses. The present study investigated a novel role for Stat1 in foam cell formation and atherosclerosis. METHODS AND RESULTS Inhibition of Stat1 activity by a Stat1-specific DNA "decoy" oligomer transfected into d...
