Transthoracic intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) insertion has been a relatively rare and uncommon procedure. However, it is an established beneficial option in patients with severe peripheral vascular disease (PVD) accompanied with bi-lateral femoral arterial occlusion. There are several viable alternatives to trans-aortic IABP insertion, including trans-axillary or in abdominal aorta (requiring...

conclusions with the increase in interventional procedures in cardiology, iatrogenic pathology of the aorta is seen more frequently, and every cardiologist should know how to diagnose and treat this group of diseases. evidence acquisition our search strategy involved an investigation in the pubmed database for every available article in peer reviewed journals between 1975 and 2015, for subjects...

Tissue Doppler imaging was used with transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography to determine its clinical usefulness beyond visualization of ventricular wall motion. Thirteen novel applications were found: acoustically difficult transthoracic studies, thrombus, mitral chordal motion, shunt detection using saline contrast, spontaneous echo contrast, intra-aortic balloon pump position and...

BACKGROUND The effect of the posture of semirecumbent patients on the hemodynamics and performance of intra-aortic balloon (IAB) were studied in vivo and in vitro. METHODS An IAB was inserted into a glass tube filled with saline, fully inflated and deflated using an intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP). Three successive cycles were filmed at 125 frames/s with the tube positioned at various angles...

The term "stunned myocardium" refers to abnormalities in the myocardial function following reperfusion and is common in on-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and is exceedingly rare in off- pump CABG. A 53-year-old man presented with unstable angina due to the severe stenosis of the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) and the obtuse marginal. Laboratory findings and Chest X-...

From November 1981 to November 1982, intra-aortic balloon pumping (IABP) was used after surgery in eight patients who were from 6 weeks to 6 years old and who weighed from 4.2 to 16.2 kg. In seven patients, specially constructed intra-aortic balloons with 2.5 and 5.0 ml volumes mounted on No. 5F catheters were used. In the largest and oldest patient, a two-chamber 10 ml balloon was used. The pu...

We report on a 76-year-old man suffering from cerebral palsy who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting. Limitation of available bypass grafts and the approach of intra-aortic balloon pump insertion are of great concern because of his specific posture resulting from multiple articular contractures. We describe our planning to survive coronary surgery in this specific situation.

In the setting of acute myocardial infarction (MI) and cardiogenic shock in patients with significant unprotected left main coronary artery (LMCA) disease, treatment options are limited. In this report of a patient presenting in cardiogenic shock secondary to acute MI with critical LMCA stenosis, percutaneous coronary intervention with intra-aortic balloon pump support proved life saving.
