Disturbance of the balance between the production of reactive oxygen species such as superoxide; hydrogen peroxide; hypochlorous acid; hydroxyl, alkoxyl, and peroxyl radicals; and antioxidant defenses against them produces oxidative stress, which amplifies tissue damage by releasing prooxidative forms of reactive iron that are able to drive Fenton chemistry and lipid peroxidation and by eroding...

Enzymatic deficiency in Gaucher disease (GD) patients may induce a cascade of events, culminating in secondary effects such as the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Detoxification through biological systems which remove or repair the damage may cause the production of peroxides and free radicals that damage all cell components, including proteins, lipids and ADN. The study's aim was ...

Cocoa is a rich source of flavonoids, mainly (-)-epicatechin, (+)-catechin, and procyanidins. This article reports the effect of continuous cocoa intake on antioxidant capacity in plasma and tissues, including lymphoid organs and liver, from young rats. Weaned Wistar rats received natural cocoa (4% or 10% food intake) for three weeks, corresponding to their infancy. Flavonoid absorption was con...

One of the major tissue damage following exposure to stress in plants is caused by the oxidative stress. In this study effects of different levels of methyl isothiocyanate on biochemical parameters and antioxidant enzyme activity such as ascorbate peroxidase, catalase and guaiacol peroxidase in seedling Lepidiun sativum L. under in vitro was investigated. The seeds of Lepidium sativum (Garden C...

Cell death and survival programs are controlled by the cellular redox state, which is typically dysregulated during oncogenesis. A recent study reports that the inhibition of antioxidant defenses resulting from glutathione depletion can prime acute lymphoblastic leukemia cells for death induced by Smac mimetics.

Oxidative stress is a component of many human diseases, including cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Exercise and various phytochemicals activate nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 (Nrf2), the master regulator of antioxidant defenses, and attenuate CVD. This review highlights Nrf2 regulation by exercise and phytochemicals and the role of Nrf2 as a therapeutic target in CVD.

Results: Flies exposed to multiple (sub-lethal) dose of PQ showed movement disorder characteristic of Parkinson’s disease (PD). The four natural antioxidants showed ameliorative effects against PQ neurotoxicity in the sub-acute model as seen in survivability, locomotor activity as well as oxidative stress markers including reactive oxygen species (ROS), lipid peroxidation and the endogenous ant...

The livers of Geophagus brasiliensis collected from both a non-polluted site and a polluted site were analyzed for different antioxidant defenses, O2 consumption, thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance (TBARS) levels, and histological damage. Compared to controls (116.6 +/- 26.1 nmol g-1), TBARS levels were enhanced at the polluted site (284.2 +/- 25.6 nmol g-1), as also was oxygen consumption ...
