Antimicrobial resistance is increasing; however, antimicrobial drug development is slowing. Now more than ever before, antimicrobial stewardship is of the utmost importance as a way to optimize the use of antimicrobials to prevent the development of resistance and improve patient outcomes. This review describes the why, what, who, how, when, and where of antimicrobial stewardship. Techniques of...

not analyze changes in the outer membrane proteins responsible for alteration of permeability. Continual monitoring of drug resistance patterns is imperative. Antimicrobial drug susceptibility testing should be conducted for clinical isolates, and empirical antimicrobial drug therapy should be changed accordingly. AmpC β-lactamase genes will eventually be transferred to typhoidal salmonellae, w...

Lincomycin, chlortetracycline, and amoxicillin are commonly used antimicrobials for growth promotion and infectious disease prophylaxis in swine production. In this study, we investigated the shifts and resistance development among intestinal microbiota in pregnant sows before and after lincomycin, chlortetracycline, and amoxicillin treatment by using phylogenetic analysis, bacterial enumeratio...

Neisseria gonorrhoeae is one of the leading antimicrobial resistance threats worldwide. This study determined the MICs of closthioamide to be 0.008 to 0.5 mg/liter for clinical N. gonorrhoeae strains and related species. Cross-resistance with existing antimicrobial resistance was not detected, indicating that closthioamide could be used to treat drug-resistant N. gonorrhoeae.

Toxin-antitoxin systems (TAs) are ubiquitous among bacteria and play a crucial role in the dissemination and evolution of antibiotic resistance, such as maintaining multi-resistant plasmids and inducing persistence formation. Generally, activities of the toxins are neutralised by their conjugate antitoxins. In contrast, antitoxins are more liable to degrade under specific conditions such as str...

Consumption of antimicrobial drugs, such as antibiotics, is linked with antimicrobial resistance. Surveillance of antimicrobial drug consumption is therefore an important element in dealing with antimicrobial resistance. Many countries lack sufficient surveillance systems. Usage of web mined data therefore has the potential to improve current surveillance methods. To this end, we study how well...

One way that bacteria resist antimicrobial agents involves 'drug sensors', proteins that bind a range of structurally unrelated antimicrobial drugs and induce expression of multidrug resistance pumps. The basis for drug recognition is now becoming clear from the recently determined crystal structure of a drug sensor.
