Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have a major role in biopreservation of foods because they are considered safe and are designated as GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) organisms. The preservative property of LAB is attributed to the combined action of a range of antimicrobial substances viz. lactic acid, acetic acid, propionic acid, carbon dioxide, hydrogen peroxide, bacteriocins and antifungal pep...

In a screening for antifungal metabolites, two indole compounds of mixed biogenesis, 1H-indole-3-carboxylic acid, 1-(1,1-dimethyl-2-propenyl) methyl ester and 1H-indole-3-carboxylic acid, 1-(2,3-dihydroxy-1,1-dimethylpropyl) methyl ester were isolated from a culture of the basidiomycete Aporpiums caryae. The structural elucidation of these compounds was accomplished by spectroscopic methods.

Aloe vera has been used worldwide both for pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetic industries due to the plethora of biological activities of some of its metabolites. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antifungal and antioxidant activities of the leaf extract. The antifungal activity was determined by the agar-well diffusion method against plant and human fungal pathogens. The methanol and et...

Xestoquinone and related metabolites (the xestoquinone family) occur in marine sponges and are known to show a variety of biological activities. In this study, the first comprehensive evaluation of antifungal activity was performed for xestoquinone and nine natural and unnatural analogues in comparison with their cytotoxicity. The cytotoxicity against two human squamous cell carcinoma cell line...

The endophytic bacterium Pseudomonas aurantiaca PB-St2 exhibits antifungal activity and represents a biocontrol agent to suppress red rot disease of sugar cane. Here, we report the completely sequenced 6.6-Mb genome of P. aurantiaca PB-St2. The sequence contains a repertoire of biosynthetic genes for secondary metabolites that putatively contribute to its antagonistic activity and its plant-mic...

Kitasatospora cheerisanensis KCTC 2395, which produces antifungal metabolites with bafilomycin derivatives, including bafilomycin C1-amide, was isolated from a soil sample at Mt. Jiri, South Korea. Here, we report its draft genome sequence, which contains 8.04 Mb with 73.6% G+C content and 7,810 protein-coding genes.

Fungal volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have the potential of being used as biocontrol agents for biotechnological applications in agriculture, industry and medicine. In this research, different VOCs from secondary metabolites of biocontrol fungus Trichoderma virens (6011) KP671477 were separated using n-hexane, n-butanol and methanol solvents and identified by gas chromatography–mass spectrom...

In a screening for antimicrobial metabolites, amides of D-allo- and L-isoleucine derivatives were isolated from the culture of a marine strain of Acremonium furcatum. Structural elucidation of these compounds was performed by analysis of spectroscopic data and confirmed by synthesis. All of the compounds, natural and synthetic intermediates, were bioassayed against bacteria and phytopathogenic ...

Fungi isolated from marine invertebrates are of considerable importance as new promising sources of unique secondary metabolites with significant biomedical potential. However, the cultivable fungal community harbored in jellyfish was less investigated. In this work, we seek to recover symbiotic fungi from different tissues of jellyfish Nemopilema nomurai. A total of seven morphotypes were isol...

Pseudomonas chlororaphis GP72 is a root-colonizing biocontrol strain isolated from a green pepper rhizosphere. It can produce several secondary metabolites to suppress phytopathogens. Here we present a 6.6-Mb assembly of its genome, which is the first genome sequence of the P. chlororaphis group and may provide insights into its antifungal activities.
