Antithyroid antibodies (Abs) are associated with epilepsy in steroid-responsive encephalopathy, but have been rarely studied in unselected epilepsy patients. This study aimed to characterize the prevalence and associated factors of antithyroid Abs and other auto-Abs in adult patients with epilepsy.Epilepsy patients without autoimmune disorders were surveyed for antinuclear antibody (ANA), anti-...
The autoimmune disease antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is characterized by the presence of anticardiolipin antibodies (aCL), along with anti-β2-glycoprotein I (β2GPI) antibodies and lupus anticoagulant (LA). In this study, we developed a time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay (TRFIA) system for simultaneous quantification of aCL IgG and IgM. A 96-well microtiter plate precoated with the complex of car...
Two-dimensional echocardiographic studies were prospectively performed in 93 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) to discover the incidence and spectrum of cardiac abnormalities and to relate these findings to the presence of high levels of anticardiolipin antibodies. Assessment of the intracardiac anatomy was also performed in an additional 12 patients who had increased anticardiol...
BACKGROUND Antiphospholipid antibodies are associated with recurrent abortion but correlation between level of antibodies and gestational age of abortion and duration post abortion is not clear. OBJECTIVES Aim of this study was study on relation between antiphospholipid antibodies in women with recurrent abortion and their gestational age and duration post abortion. PATIENTS AND METHODS We ...
AIM To present the impact of parathyroidectomy on the spontaneous healing of necrotic lesions of the skin of the lower leg and on anticardiolipin antibodies regression in a 68-year-old female dialyzed patient with hyperparathyroidism and calcific-uremic arteriolopathy (CUA). METHODS After the occurrence of initial lesions of the lower leg skin, the intact parathyroid (iPTH) level, calcium (Ca...
Background: The clinical significance of antiphospholipid antibodies in patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) and some other viral infections is controversial. Objective: To study the prevalence of anticardiolipin antibody (ACLA) and antibeta2glycoproteinI antibody (antibeta2GPI antibody) in HCV and hepatitis B virus (HBV) infected patients and its association with liver clinical parame...
We report two cases of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis associated with an antibody to phospholipids, namely the lupus anticoagulant. Both patients later developed further immunologically mediated conditions. The importance of screening for the lupus anticoagulant in addition to anticardiolipin antibodies in this condition and the need for follow-up of such patients is discussed.
A case of high grade B cell lymphoma presented with bone marrow necrosis, followed by development of extensive marrow fibrosis, the evolution of which was documented by serial magnetic resonance imaging and bone marrow trephine histology. A markedly raised anticardiolipin antibody titre at diagnosis suggests that lymphoma associated antiphospholipid syndrome may have contributed to the aetiolog...
