Nitrates pollution of waters is a worldwide problem and its remediation is a big challenge from the technical and the scientific point of view. One of the most used and promising cleaning techniques is the biological treatment of wastewaters operated by denitrifying bacteria. In this paper we begin a thorough study of denitrifying performances of the bacterium Azospira sp. OGA 24, recently isol...

Accretionary prisms are mainly composed of ancient marine sediment scraped from the subducting oceanic plate at a convergent plate boundary. Large amounts of anaerobic groundwater and natural gas, mainly methane (CH4) and nitrogen gas (N2), are present in the deep aquifers associated with an accretionary prism; however, the origins of these gases are poorly understood. We herein revealed region...

After closure of a waste disposal cell in a repository for radioactive waste, resaturation is likely to cause the release of soluble species contained in cement and bituminous matrices, such as ionic species (nitrates, sulfates, calcium and alkaline ions, etc.), organic matter (mainly organic acids), or gases (from steel containers and reinforced concrete structures as well as from radiolysis w...

In wet soils, low oxygen conditions often develop that favour disease development by many soil-borne plant pathogens. The introduction of a biocontrol agent, to suppress disease development, would require that the agent remains metabolically active under such conditions. Denitrifying bacteria can maintain this metabolic activity by switching to nitrate respiration. In the rhizosphere, plant roo...

Community Level Physiological Profiles (CLPP) is novel method to evaluate microbial activity and diversity in ecosystems. According to the previous findings, poly-β-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) as a bio-control product, increases bacterial diversity in some aquatic animals. In this study, the effects of four experimental diets (control, combination of two PHB degrading bacteria, 2% PHB, bacteria+ 2% P...

The effects of electro-stimulation on heterotrophic denitrifying bacterial activity and nitrate removal were investigated using a bench-scale bio-electrochemical reactor in this study. Results showed that the maximum nitrate removal efficiency was 100% at the optimum current density of 200mA/m(2), at which low nitrite production and high ATP aggregate level were obtained. The activity of denitr...

The denitrifying anaerobic methane oxidation is an ecologically important process for reducing the potential methane emission into the atmosphere. The responsible bacterium for this process was Candidatus Methylomirabilis oxyfera belonging to the bacterial phylum of NC10. In this study, a new pair of primers targeting all the five groups of NC10 bacteria was designed to amplify NC10 bacteria fr...

Twenty six anaerobes were recovered from 150 deep-seated abscess samples cultured by the proposed two-step combustion-modified candle-jar system and Anoxomat. The degree of growth and colony size were similar in both systems, except for Clostridium difficile. The modified candle-jar system was found to be a sensitive and cost-effective alternative that might be used in resource-limited settings.
