We report a simple, straightforward, and efficient approach to assemble single gold nanorods (AuNRs) into highly aligned arrays, via a unique vacuum-enhanced capillarity. The assembled AuNR arrays demonstrate both an excellently unidirectional ordering and a wonderful single-rod resolution. The key role of vacuum in this approach enables high-aspect-ratio (10 to 22) AuNR alignment and efficient...

Because of their importance in fundamental research and possible applications in nanotechnology and nanoelectronics, semiconductor nanowires have attracted much interest. In addition to the growth itself, the control of the size and location is an essential problem. Here we show the growth of ordered arrays of vertically aligned silicon nanowires by molecular beam epitaxy using prepatterned arr...

A combination of UV/ozone and vacuum pyrolysis treatments is introduced to tune the wetting properties of vertically aligned multiwalled carbon nanotube arrays. The UV/ozone treatment renders these arrays superhydrophilic by functionalizing them with oxygenated functional groups. These superhydrophilic arrays have a high affinity to water such that they have a very high specific capacitance in ...

Metallic copper, which is normally considered as a contaminant in the growth of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), was found to be an efficient catalyst to grow SWNTs under suitable conditions. It showed very high catalytic activity for the growth of both random SWNT networks and horizontally aligned SWNT arrays. Especially, high-quality SWNT arrays were obtained when monodispersed copper ...

Nanostructured terahertz detectors employing a single semiconducting nanowire or graphene sheet have recently generated considerable interest as an alternative to existing THz technologies, for their merit on the ease of fabrication and above-room-temperature operation. However, the lack of alignment in nanostructure device hindered their potential toward practical applications. The present wor...

By thermal evaporation of pure ZnO powders, high-density vertical-aligned ZnO nanorod arrays with diameter ranged in 80–250 nm were successfully synthesized on Si substrates covered with ZnO seed layers. It was revealed that the morphology, orientation, crystal, and optical quality of the ZnO nanorod arrays highly depend on the crystal quality of ZnO seed layers, which was confirmed by the char...

We report an all-dry fabrication method of the hybrid structure of pH-responsive hydrogel and carbon nanotube arrays using initiated chemical vapor deposition (iCVD). Vertically aligned carbon nanotube (VACNT) arrays with low site density were coated by a vapor-deposited poly(methacrylic acid-coethylene glycol diacrylate) hydrogel with complete retention of the aligned structure and precise con...

Vertically aligned carbon nanofiber (VACNF) electrode arrays were tested for their potential application in recording neuro-electrophysiological activity. We report, for the first time, stimulation and extracellular recording of spontaneous and evoked neuroelectrical activity in organotypic hippocampal slice cultures with ultramicroelectrode VACNF arrays. Because the electrodes are carbon-based...

To create an effective well-ordered delivery platform still remains a challenge. Herein we fabricate vertically aligned alumina nanowire arrays via atomic layer deposition templated by carbon nanotubes. Using these arrays, a caspase-3/7 inhibitor was delivered into DC 2.4 cells and blocked apoptosis, as confirmed by fluorescence microscopy.

We developed means to form multilayer superstructures of large collections of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) configured in horizontally aligned arrays, random networks, and complex geometries of arrays and networks on a wide range of substrates. The approach involves guided growth of SWNTs on crystalline and amorphous substrates followed by sequential, multiple step transfer of the resu...
