An evaluation was made of media and tests used for differentiating nonfermenting gram-negative bacteria encountered in medical bacteriology in order to determine those diagnostic procedures most useful in identifying these bacteria. The organisms examined included Alcaligenes faecalis, A. odorans var. viridans, Moraxella duplex (Mima polymorpha var. oxidans), Acinetobacter anitratum (Herellea v...

Antimicrobial susceptibility data regarding nonfermentative, gram-negative bacteria (Pseudomonas, Alcaligenes, Acinetobacter, Moraxella, Flavobacterium) are presented showing that the antibiograms of most species examined can be used as an important auxillary aid in their differentiation.

A recently described bacterium, Alcaligenes piechaudii, was isolated repeatedly from the ear discharge of a diabetic man. This appears to be the first report of human infection in which there is clinical evidence of a pathogenic role for this species.

A bacterial isolate, Alcaligenes sp. secreting phytase (EC 3.1.3.8), was isolated and characterized. The optimum conditions for the production of phytase included a fermentation period of 96 h, pH 8.0, and the addition of 1% (w/v) maltose and 1% (w/v) beef extract to the culture medium. This enzyme was purified to homogeneity and had an apparent molecular mass of 41 kDa. The optimum pH range an...

The purpose of the present work was to inform about the first case of meningitis associated to the bacteria Alcaligenes xylosoxidans in a patient with HIV/AIDS. The patient was a 46-year-old male, with the antecedent of have been diagnosed for HIV/ AIDS, who attended in the Hospital Universitario de Colima, Mexico, with fever, shock and meningismus. The study of the cerebrospinal fluid showed p...

Alcaligenes xylosoxidans, formerly known as Achromobacter xylosoxidans is a nonfermenting gram-negative rod, that is increasingly been identified as a pathogen in the last decade. Nowadays the name commonly accepted for correct taxonomy is Achromobacter xylosoxidans. It has been isolated from several aqueous environmental sources, some of which have been associated with nosocomial outbreaks of ...

Five strains of bacteria, namely, Exiguobacterium sp. ASW-1, Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain ASW-2, Alcaligenes sp. ASW-3, Alcaligenes sp. ASS-1, and Bacillus sp. ASS-2, were isolated from the Zhejiang coast in China. The mixed flora of the five strains performed well with degrading 75.1% crude oil (1%, w/v) in 7 days. The calcium alginate-activated carbon embedding carrier was used to immobilize...

A total of 432 bacterial isolates from washed and unwashed eggs, egg-washer surfaces, and washwaters from five egg-grading plants in Maryland and southeastern Pennsylvania were classified. Counts on equipment surfaces showed considerable variation from plant to plant, reflecting care used in cleaning. Unwashed eggs had a higher percentage of gram-positive cocci (71%), and isolates included Stre...
