When I was a little boy, my mom always made sure that I had enough change to make a phone call in case of emergency. Twenty years later, mobile phones allowed us to make calls at any time and place. After another 20 years of innovation, the phone is no longer the key feature of our smart devices, which can take beautiful pictures, stream audio and video, provide access to a wide variety of serv...
The human paracaspase mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma translocation protein 1 (MALT1) plays a central role in nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) signaling as both a protease and scaffolding protein. Knocking out MALT1 leads to impaired NF-κB signaling and failure to mount an effective immune response. However, it is unclear to which degree it is the scaffolding function versus the proteolytic...
Streams of high speed dust particles originate from Jupiter’s innermost Galilean moon Io. After release from Io, the particles collect electric charges in the Io plasma torus, gain energy from the co-rotating electric field of Jupiter’s magnetosphere, and leave the Jovian system into interplanetary space with escape speeds over 200 km s. Galileo, which was the first orbiter spacecraft of Jupite...
BACKGROUND Physical activity is important in ill-health. Inexpensive, accurate and precise devices could help assess daily activity. We integrated novel activity-sensing technology into an earpiece used with portable music-players and phones; the physical-activity-sensing earpiece (PASE). Here we examined whether the PASE could accurately and precisely detect physical activity and measure its i...
The purpose of this study was to investigate the cross-sectional associations of monitor-derived measures of sedentary time and physical activity with performance-based physical function in healthy Australian adults. Data from 602 participants (mean age 58.1±10.0 years; 58% female) from the 2011/12 wave of the Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle (AusDiab3) study were analyzed. The thigh-...
The peroxisome-proliferator-activated-receptor-γ (PPARγ) is a member of the nuclear receptor superfamily that plays a critical role in diverse biological processes, including adipogenesis, lipid metabolism, and placental development. To study the activity of PPARγ, we constructed two new reporter genes: a fluorescent GFP-tagged histone-2B (PPRE-H2B-eGFP) and a secreted nanoluciferase (PPRE-pNL1...
The UK National Health Service is subject to variation in demand for medical services, particularly during the winter. Such variations can cause major problems for the management of services to patients. This paper describes System Watch, a real-time system to assist with healthcare planning in NHS Scotland.
Arachidonic acid derivatives equipped with either one or two fluorescent groups attached to the tip of the alkyl chains were synthesized and shown to function as inhibitor and substrate probes of cPLA2. The inhibitor probe was demonstrated to perform dual functions of inhibition and imaging while the substrate probe could be used for activity assay.
