Thermophilic, nitrogen-fixing, blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) were investigated for use in biophotolysis. Three strains of Mastigocladus laminosus were tested and were found to be equally effective in biophotolysis as judged by nitrogenase activity. The alga, M. laminosus NZ-86-m, which was chosen for further study, grew well in the temperature range from 35 to 50 degrees C, with optimum grow...

The microsymbiont population in soybean root nodules (Glycine max L. cv Williams 82 inoculated with Bradyrhizobium japonicum 2143) was characterized during symbiotic development to determine the extent of heterogeneity in this population. The microsymbiont population was isolated by centrifugation through a continuous sucrose gradient (44 to 57% weight to weight ratio) and appeared homogeneous ...

K,ZNA, T. M., and J . D. TJEPKEMA. 1978. Nitrogen fixation associated withScirprrs trtral.i~.etl.s and other nonnodulated plants in Massachusetts. Can. J . Bot. 56: 26362640. Nitrogen fixation was measured using the acetylene reduction technique in soil cores of 13 nonnodulated. herbaceous plant species growing in mesic and wetland habitats. Six species that grew in a well-drained portion of an...

The synthesis and accumulation of nitrite has been suggested as a causative factor in the inhibition of legume nodules supplied with nitrate. Plants were grown in sand culture with a moderate level of nitrate (2.1 to 6.4 millimolar) supplied continuously from seed germination to 30 to 50 days after planting. In a comparison of nitrate treatments, a highly significant negative correlation betwee...

Mixed cultures of Cellulomonas sp. and Azospirillum brasilense were grown with straw or cellulose as the carbon source under conditions favoring the fixation of atmospheric nitrogen. Rapid increases in cell numbers, up to 10 cells per g of substrate, were evident after 4 and 5 days of incubation at 30 degrees C for cellulose and straw, respectively. Nitrogen fixation (detected by acetylene redu...

Examination of root systems and adhering soil associated with unusually green corn plants from nitrogen-deficient areas in fields has revealed higher acetylene-reducing activities than comparable root systems of chlorotic plants that appeared to be nitrogen deficient. From the root systems with acetylene-reducing activity, N(2)-fixing Enterobacter cloacae were isolated. Pure cultures of the org...

Here we examined the impact of a commonly employed method used to measure nitrogen fixation, the acetylene reduction assay (ARA), on a marine sediment community. Historically, the ARA technique has been broadly employed for its ease of use, in spite of numerous known artifacts. To gauge the severity of these effects in a natural environment, we employed high-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing ...

Nodulation and acetylene reduction were demonstrated for cliffrose (Cowania mexicana var. stansburiana [Torr.] Jeps.) in a greenhouse trial. Nitrogen fixation was also verified with (15)N. Seedlings were grown in a soil known to nodulate both bitterbrush species (Purshia tridentata (Pursh) D.C. and P. glandulosa [Curran]) to which a suspension of crushed bitterbrush nodules had been added. Bitt...

A novel single-pot method to exfoliate and functionalize acetylene black is proposed. The deliberate functionalization was found to enhance the intrinsic oxygen reduction efficiency along with the nucleation and growth of platinum nano-particles on the surface. The resulting material showed enormously high oxygen reduction reactivity compared to its commercial counterparts.

Sex expression in cucumber is influenced by hormonal and environmental factors such as day length and temperature. Increasing female flowers that will develop to fruit is a trick for increasing yield, hence it’s importance. Likewise, it would help breeders through hybridizing process. Ethylene as a plant hormone is known to increase female flowers of most members of Cucurbitaceae family but as ...
