Over the past decade, the phenomenon of self-representation in civil cases has led to the development of programs designed to facilitate self-representation. A revitalized movement seeking to establish a civil right to counsel has emerged (civil Gideon, a civil right to counsel based on Gideon v. Wainwright), pressing for the expansion of the availability of counsel for the poor. What are the s...

In Indiana v. Edwards (2008) the U.S. Supreme Court held that a higher standard may be required for pro se competence (PSC) than for competence to stand trial (CST), but provided little guidance for the trial court judge. This survey of forensic mental health experts studied potential PSC criteria. Sixty-eight (22.7%) forensic evaluators replied. Three McGarry criteria were reported as requirin...

The random generation of coherent solitary waves from incoherent waves in a medium with an instantaneous nonlinearity has been observed. One excites a propagating incoherent spin wave packet in a magnetic film strip and observes the random appearance of solitary wave pulses. These pulses are as coherent as traditional solitary waves, but with random timing and a random peak amplitude.

A trial is reported in which RAMC staff working in a dressing station and wearing full NBC Individual Protective Equipment (IPE), attempted to take pulse and blood pressure (BP) readings on casualties similarly clad. These basic parameters however, were obtained from only half the casualties, the time taken to obtain them was prohibitive and the blood pressures were inaccurate. Certain remedies...

Detailed measurements of finite-amplitude pulses radiated by plane and focused circular pistons in water are presented. Comparisons of time waveforms and frequency spectra, both on and off axis, are made with numerical calculations based on the nonlinear parabolic wave equation. Emphasis is on nonlinear distortion of amplitude- and frequency-modulated tone bursts. Use of short pulses enabled re...

We frequently take notes when attending class. The method of note-taking includes writing much information as a paper record. However, we cannot write such notes in a notebook if no visual feedback information exists. We propose a pen-based note-taking system, designated as the Pen-Talker, for a visually disabled person to use on an ultra-mobile PC. Using the Pen-Talker, a blind novice user wit...
