Heidelberger and Avery’s early experiments hinged on a simple element: nitrogen. Based on its presence or absence, the duo showed that the antibody-reactive substances on pneumococcal bacterial capsules were nitrogen-free carbohydrates, and that the reacting antibodies were nitrogencontaining proteins (see “How Heidelberger and Avery sweetened immunology” JEM 202:1306). The discovery that antib...
2014 The thickness, d, dependence of the extraordinary (R1) and spontaneous (Rs) Hall coefficients of iron films was studied in the range 100-1 000 Å. The R1.a and Rs.a versus a curves exhibit a straight line behaviour; this is interpreted in terms of size effects in the total film resistivity in agreement with some theoretical studies on the Hall effect in bulk ferromagnetics which have predic...
We propose a portmanteau test for serial correlation of the error term in a fixed effects model. The test is derived as a Lagrange multiplier test, but it also has a straightforward Wald test interpretation. In Monte Carlo experiments, the test displays good size and power properties. ∗The authors thank the co-editor, the referee, David Drukker, Christian Hansen, and Jeffrey Wooldridge for thei...
The basis-set convergence of singlet and triplet pair energies of coupled-cluster theory including single and double excitations is accelerated by means of extrapolations based on the distinct convergence behaviors of these pairs. The new extrapolation procedure predicts a nonrelativistic Born–Oppenheimer inversion barrier of 1767 ± 12 cm−1 for NH3. An effective one-dimensional, vibrationally a...

2014 X-ray diffraction experiments with lyotropic calamitic-nematic phases and induced lyotropic calamitic-cholesteric phases doped with brucine sulfate and d-octanol are performed. The diffraction pattern of the usual oriented nematic phase is compared with the patterns of the untwisted cholesteric phase. The analysis of the patterns indicate that even in the cholesteric phase the pseudo-lamel...
We demonstrate new optical techniques for externally controlling the latchable output power of a semiconductor-optical-amplifier-based flip-flop. Optical 'set' and 'reset' signals increase and decrease the re-fractive index, respectively, via cross-phase modulation (XPM). Set signals, which deplete the carrier density, have wavelengths between 1533 and 1568 nm, and powers as low as 22 microW. R...
