1-Naphthol has recently been shown to be selectively toxic to short-term organ cultures of human colorectal tumor tissue. The mechanism underlying 1-naphthol’s selective toxicity is as yet unknown, but may be due to the formation of naphthoquinone metabolites, which are known to be highly toxic to tumor cells. By using highperformance liquid chromatography with reductive electrochemical detecti...

Many bacteria convert bicyclic compounds, such as indole and naphthalene, to oxidized compounds, including hydroxyindoles and naphthols. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a ubiquitous bacterium that inhabits diverse environments, shows pathogenicity against animals, plants, and other microorganisms, and increasing evidence has shown that several bicyclic compounds alter the virulence-related phenotypes o...

A room-temperature phosphorimetric (RTP) study of the inclusion process between 1- and 2-naphthol, beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) and 3-bromo-1-propanol as heavy atom pertuber has been performed. Experimental conditions were optimized for the formation of trimolecular complexes with lifetimes of 10.82 and 9.41 ms for 1- and 2-naphthol, respectively. A synchronous-derivative room-temperature phosph...

The oxidative metabolism of benzo(a)pyrene and the conjugative metabolism of 1-naphthol by explant cultures of normal human colon and colonic tumor tissue, obtained at surgery, have been studied. After 24 hr in culture, the explants were exposed to either [1-14C]-1-naphthol (20 to 100 microM) or [3H]-benzo(a) pyrene (1.5 microM) for a further 1.5 to 24 hr. Both normal-appearing tissue and tumor...

A major problem in cancer chemotherapy is the lack of selective toxicity of many commonly used anti-cancer agents towards tumour tissue compared to normal tissue.1 This is due primarily to the fact that many of these drugs, such as the alkylating agents, attack rapidly dividing tissues of the host as well as the tumour. Another area of concern is the refractory nature of many solid tumours to e...

In the title compound, 2C(10)H(7)BrO·C(4)H(10)N(2), the piperazine (pip) mol-ecule displays a chair conformation and is linked to two mol-ecules of 6-bromo-2-naphthol (bno) via O-H⋯N hydrogen bonds. Weak N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds from pip to bno mol-ecules result in chains propagating in [100]. The chains inter-act via C-H⋯π inter-actions.
