The goal of this study was to identify a source of natural plant compounds with inhibitory activity against pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV). We showed, using a half-leaf assay, that murrayafoline-A (1) and isomahanine (2) isolated from the aerial parts of Glycosmis stenocarpa have inhibitory activity against PMMoV through curative, inactivation, and protection effects. Using a leaf-disk assay,...
The complete nucleotide sequence of the maize chlorotic mottle virus (MCMV) genome has been determined to be 4437 nucleotides. The viral genome has four long open reading frames (ORFs) which could encode polypeptides of 31.6, 50, 8.9 and 25.1 kd. If the termination codons, for the polypeptides encoded by the 50 and 8.9 kd ORFs are suppressed, readthrough products of 111 and 32.7 kd result. The ...
Red clover mottle virus (RCMV) is a member of the comoviruses, a group of picornavirus-like plant viruses. The X-ray structure of RCMV strain S has been determined and refined to 2.4 A. The overall structure of RCMV is similar to that of two other comoviruses, Cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV) and Bean pod mottle virus (BPMV). The sequence of the coat proteins of RCMV strain O were modeled into the ca...
Microtubules are closely associated with tubules containing virus particles in leaf cells infected with bean pod mottle virus or cowpea mosaic virus. The similar orientation and apparent continuity suggest that cores of tubules with virus particles are actually microtubules. It is suggested that microtubules may be involved in the intraand intercellular movement of viral components and in the a...
The tospoviruses Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV), Groundnut ringspot virus (GRSV), Tomato chlorotic spot virus (TCSV), Watermelon silver mottle virus (WSMV) and the new proposed species Capsicum chlorosis virus constitute a severe threat to Capsicum cultivation. Resistance to TSWV but not to other tospoviruses, based on a hypersensitive reaction, has been found only in accessions of C. chinens...
Since 1999, "emerging" (EM) strains of Watermelon mosaic virus (WMV) have been detected in cucurbit crops of southeastern France, probably as a result of recent introductions. Population genetic approaches were used to study the structure of EM isolates in southeastern France and to identify factors involved in their spatial distribution. A population clustering method (SAMOVA) and a maximum-di...
The complete genome sequence of a Pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV) isolate obtained from Northeast China was determined by reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) and rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE). Phylogenetic analysis showed that the virus isolate is closely related to Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, and U.S. isolates.
The complete genome sequence of an isolate of tomato mottle mosaic virus (ToMMV) infecting tomatoes in New York was obtained using small RNA (sRNA) deep sequencing. ToMMV_NY-13 shared 99% sequence identity with isolates from Mexico and Florida. Broader distribution of this emerging virus is a cause for concern to the tomato industry.
