We report a patient with vulvar lichen sclerosus, Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), and later vulvar cancer. In LCH, high amounts of non functional Langerhans cells are present in the affected tissue, making it possible that LCH may have contributed to vulvar cancer development in this patient.
BACKGROUND First described in 1872, syringomas are common intraepidermal sweat gland tumors most often found in women during adolescence. Frequent involvement areas are the lower eyelids and malar areas; vulvar involvement is relatively rare. These lesions often appear as small, separate, yellowish papules of about 1-3 mm in size and are generally associated with increased vulvar discomfort and...
BACKGROUND We present a case of Actinomyces israelii causing vulvar mass suspicious for malignancy in a postmenopausal woman. CASE A 60 year-old woman presented due to a firm, nonmobile, 10 cm vulvar mass, which had been rapidly enlarging for 5 months. The mass was painful, with localized pruritus and sinus tracts oozing of serosanguinous fluid. Biopsy and cultures revealed a ruptured epiderm...
Smooth muscle neoplasms of the vulva can be mistaken for Bartholin duct cysts, which can lead to a delay in diagnosis. We present a case of vulvar leiomyoma and a case of leiomyosarcoma that clinically mimicked Bartholin duct cysts. Identification of leiomyosarcomas in this region is particularly important; due to the risk of recurrence, patients may need radiation and/or chemotherapy in additi...
vulvar necrotizing fascitis is an uncommon infectious disorder. since the first reported cases almost 100 years, ago, necrotizing fasciitis continues to present a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. what usually begins as a subtle infection can become life-threatening. we report two cases of vulvar necrotizing fasciitis, one after posterior colporrhaphy in a woman with four risk factors and t...
OBJECTIVE We used validated sensitive and specific questions associated with clinically confirmed diagnoses of unexplained vulvar pain (vulvodynia) to compare the cumulative incidence of vulvar pain and prevalence of care-seeking behavior in Boston metropolitan area (BMA) and in Minneapolis/Saint Paul metropolitan area (MSP) from 2001 through 2005 using census-based data, and 2010 through 2012,...
Objective The risk factors for vulvar dysplasia and infections are not fully known. In this study, we aimed to investigate the correlation between pubic hair shaving and the occurrence of vulvar inflammation, dysplasia, and cancer. Methods This study was performed between January 2013 and December 2016 in which a standardized questionnaire concerning genital hair shaving was administered to v...
A procedure that could allow an early in vivo and non-invasive detection of vulvar lesions would be extremely useful. We tested an innovative optical method (Optiprobe), which uses a harmless, visible light source for the in vivo, on-line detection of minimal alterations in the structure of vulvar epithelium. A group of 3 female volunteers without gynecological symptoms were first screened to e...
BACKGROUND Vaccine efficacy (VE) against vulvar human papillomavirus (HPV) infection has not been reported and data regarding its epidemiology are sparse. METHODS Women (n = 5404) age 22-29 present at the 4-year study visit of the Costa Rica Vaccine Trial provided vulvar and cervical samples. A subset (n = 1044) was tested for HPV DNA (SPF10/LiPA25 version 1). VE against 1-time detection of v...
Background: With 6,020 new cases and 1,150 deaths annually in the United States, vulvar cancer is uncommon, resulting in age-adjusted incidence rates of 2.8 and 1.7 per 100,000 in white and black women, respectively. Vulvar cancer represents about 4% to 6% of malignancies of th...
