OBJECTIVE To compare the traditional two injections dorsal digital block with volar block in terms of effectiveness of anaesthesia and pain of initial pinprick. STUDY DESIGN Quasi-experimental. PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY AVH and casualty operation theatres, Mayo Hospital, KEMU, Lahore, from January to June 2007. METHODOLOGY Thirty patients requiring surgical procedure distal to proximal ...
The aim of this study was to compare bridging external fixation with volar locked plating in patients with unstable distal radial fractures regarding functional outcome. A systematic search was performed in the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Medline and EMBASE. All randomized controlled trials that compared bridging external fixation directly with volar locked plating in patien...
Volar fixation of dorsally unstable distal radius fractures is a new method of treatment that provides the benefits of stable internal fixation without the complications of the dorsal approach. A new, fixed-angle fixation device, the distal volar radius (DVR) plate, (Fig. 1) has been introduced for this purpose. Experience gained by applying this technique to clinically complex cases led us to ...
BACKGROUND The purpose of the present study is to report on a cohort of patients with a volar shearing fracture of the distal end of the radius in whom the unique anatomy of the distal cortical rim of the radius led to failure of support of a volar ulnar lunate facet fracture fragment. METHODS Seven patients with a volar shearing fracture of the distal part of the radius who lost fixation of ...
INTRODUCTION Fractures of the distal radius are very common and mainly occur in the elderly. There has been an increasing use of locked volar plate fixations which report satisfactory results. However, some authors advocate the use of nail fixation. HYPOTHESIS The aim of this study is to compare dorsal nail plate versus locked volar plate fixation in the treatment of distal radius fractures w...
Background and Objectives: The management of Volar Barton’s fractures either by operative or conservative means is a difficult problem. The present study was conducted with an objective to analyze the clinical and functional results of these fractures fixed internally using volar buttress plate.
Volar dislocations of the thumb metacarpophalangeal joint are uncommon and can be associated with rupture of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL). We report a case where a volar thumb dislocation was successfully closed reduced, but instability required open repair of the UCL. Early motion protocol helped achieve favorable results.
Figure 1. Puncture wound overlying the volar base of the long finger. The formation of a collar button abscess can be seen on both the dorsal and volar sides of the hand. The long and index fingers are abducted at rest.
Restoration of volar tilt is critical when performing open reduction and internal fixation of distal radius fractures. A reproducible technique is required to consistently achieve this goal. A simple technique using the locking plate and an electrocautery scratch pad as reduction tools can reliably generate volar tilt. This technique can be performed with minimal aid from surgical assistants.
Figure 1. Full-thickness defect of the volar aspect of the right distal thumb. DESCRIPTION A 56-year-old right-hand-dominant man sustained an avulsion injury to his right thumb while operating a rotating chain machine, resulting in a full-thickness traumatic defect of the volar aspect of the distal thumb measuring 7 cm 2 (Fig 1).
