In 2011 and 2012, a large outbreak of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections affecting 57 laboratory-confirmed patients occurred in an adult hematology unit in Heidelberg, Germany. During the outbreak investigation, we performed molecular genotyping of RSV strains to differentiate between single versus multiple introductions of the virus into the unit. Furthermore, we assessed the time of...

It is largely unknown why certain infected hosts shed Herpes Simplex Virus-2 (HSV-2) more frequently and have more severe disease manifestations than others. One idea is that different density or functional capacity of tissue resident effector memory CD8+ T-cells between infected persons may explain phenotypic variability. To generate hypotheses for contrasting shedding patterns in different in...

Since December 2019, COVID 19 pandemic has devastated communities across the world. As number of patients recovered from continue to rise, question acquired immunity versus chances re-infection becomes critical understand future spread infection. Here, we present a case patient previously COVID-19, develops new symptoms concerning for possible with positive reverse transcriptase-polymera...

A signature feature of HIV infection is poor control of herpes virus infections, which reactivate from latency and cause opportunistic infections. While the general mechanism underlying this observation is deficient CD4+T-cell function, it is unknown whether increased severity of herpes virus infections is due primarily to poor immune control in latent or lytic sites of infection, or whether CD...

We describe the antiviral effect of maraviroc in a patient who had been shedding high levels of HIV-1 in seminal fluid for three years despite an undetectable blood plasma viral load. Adding maraviroc to HAART stopped the seminal shedding. We discuss the mechanisms involved and the effect on sexual transmission.

Human infections with Nipah virus in Malaysia and Bangladesh are associated with markedly different patterns of transmission and pathogenicity. To compare the 2 strains, we conducted an in vivo study in which 2 groups of ferrets were oronasally exposed to either the Malaysia or Bangladesh strain of Nipah virus. Viral shedding and tissue tropism were compared between the 2 groups. Over the cours...

Patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) are considered to be at increased risk for 2009 H1N1 influenza-related complications. We performed an observational study after an outbreak of 2009 H1N1 influenza virus infection among a group of 15 HIV-1-infected school-aged children in Germany in October 2009. Clinical course, kinetics of viral shedding, and antibody response ...
