BACKGROUND Takotsubo cardiomyopathy also known as transient balooning syndrome is an increasingly reported phenomenon characterized by acute reversible apical or midventricular dysfunction. This stress- induced cardiomyopathy mimics myocardial infarction, but without significant coronary artery disease, and rarely presents in perioperative period. METHODS AND RESULTS We report a case of postm...
The patient was a male with myasthenia gravis, hospitalized with acute respiratory failure due to decompensation of the underlying disease. He evolved with findings suggestive of acute myocardial infarction, with electrocardiographic and enzymatic alterations compatible with that diagnosis. The patient underwent emergency coronary angiography, which showed no severe coronary obstruction, althou...
Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, also called transient left ventricular apical ballooning syndrome or Gebrochenes-Herz-Syndrome, is a rare entity which may masquerade as acute coronary syndrome (ACS) with sudden onset of chest pain and/or dyspnea, transient left ventricle apical akinesia, electrocardiographic changes typical of ACS and mild increase in cardiac enzymes in the background of normal coron...
INTRODUCTION "Takotsubo cardiomyopathy" is characterized by transient LV dysfunction and mimicking acute myocardial infarction. CASE PRESENTATION We reported a case with atypical presentation of "takotsubo cardiomyopathy" without ST segment elevation, but with severe transient left ventricular dysfunction. CONCLUSION Diagnosis of "takotsubo cardiomyopathy" should be based on typical left ve...
takotsubo or stress-induced cardiomyopathy is a cardiomyopathy in which the patient has a sudden onset, reversible left ventricular systolic dysfunction without any significant coronary artery disease. four women, who were at a mean age of 64 years and suffered from chest pain exacerbated by emotional stress, were admitted as cases of acute coronary syndrome and were completely evaluated throug...
Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TCM), also known as stress-induced cardiomyopathy or transient left ventricular apical ballooning syndrome, is characterized by reversible left ventricular (LV) dysfunction that is frequently precipitated by a stressful event. LV thrombus is a recognized complication of TCM; however, the clinical significance and therapy of LV thrombus in TCM remain unclear. Here we re...
Despite considerable interest in the syndrome of acute left ventricular (LV) ballooning, its pathophysiology has remained ill-defined. In this review, we explore observational data describing two etiologies LV ballooning: neurohumoral classic Takotsubo Syndrome (TTS), and severe unrelenting outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction patients with obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). We describe...
Inverted Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, a less common variant in the spectrum of stress-induced cardiomyopathy, is increasingly being reported. This report describes an acute psychiatric illness leading to the onset of this syndrome. The patient presented here developed cardiogenic shock but successfully recovered with the use of a percutaneous left ventricular assist device.
We report a case of Takotsubo syndrome after epilepsy, and review the literature. We identified 59 cases of Takotsubo syndrome after focal or generalised epilepsy. As in Takotsubo syndrome in general, the patients were mostly female (84%), with a mean age of 63 years, and the evolution was generally favourable. There was one death and one stroke, and 4 cases were of relapsing Takotsubo after a ...
To the Editor:—I enjoyed reading the case report about Takotsubo cardiomyopathy after general anesthesia by Gavish et al. in the September 2006 issue of ANESTHESIOLOGY. It is noteworthy that another case report of postoperative Takotsubo-like left ventricular dysfunction that occurred in France was published in the same month in the September 2006 issue of Anesthesia & Analgesia and was accompa...
