The response of the antioxidant defense system of an intertidal macroalgae Corallina officinalis L. to different dosages of UV-B irradiation was investigated. Results showed that superoxide dimutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POX) increased and then maintained at a relatively stable level when subjected to UV-B irradiation. Catalase (CAT) activity under medium dosage of UV-B irradiation (Muv) and hi...

Stress induced by ultraviolet-B (UV-B) irradiation stimulates the accumulation of various secondary metabolites in plants. Nitric oxide (NO) serves as an important secondary messenger in UV-B stress-induced signal transduction pathways. NO can be synthesized in plants by either enzymatic catalysis or an inorganic nitrogen pathway. The effects of UV-B irradiation on the production of baicalin an...

The purpose of this study was to determine the production of metalloproteinases (MMP) 2 and 9 following UV-B irradiation in human corneal epithelial cells and fibroblasts. Epithelial cells and fibroblasts were separated from human donor corneas and exposed to UV-B lamp irradiation for 20, 40, 80 and 120 s. Media samples were collected at 8, 24, 48 and 72 h and gelatinase A and B production was ...

UV light induces DNA lesions, which are removed by nucleotide excision repair (NER). Exonuclease 1 (EXO1) is highly conserved from yeast to human and is implicated in numerous DNA metabolic pathways, including repair, recombination, replication, and telomere maintenance. Here we show that hEXO1 is involved in the cellular response to UV irradiation in human cells. After local UV irradiation, fl...

The photoreduction process of PtCl(6)2- to Pt nanoparticles in poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) solutions upon UV light irradiation was investigated by monitoring the change in the diffusion coefficient (D). The D values of chemical species during UV irradiation was measured by the laser-induced transient grating (TG) method. The TG signal of the PtCl(6)2- solution before UV irradiation was composed...

Transformation of nanomaterials in aqueous environment has significant impact on their behavior in engineered application and natural system. In this paper, UV irradiation induced transformation of TiO2 nanoparticles in aqueous solutions was demonstrated, and its effect on the aggregation and photocatalytic reactivity of TiO2 was investigated. UV irradiation of a TiO2 nanoparticle suspension ac...

The study aims to investigate the effect of repetitive ultraviolet irradiation (UV–UV) and the combination effect with dimethyl dicarbonate (UV–DMDC–UV) on the physico-chemical properties and microbiological stability of pineapple juice. UV dosages of 10.76 mJ/cm2 percycle and 250 ppm of DMDC were used. There was a significant decrease in turbidity, total phenolic and vitamin C in the treated j...

INTRODUCTION The clinical and histological changes of nevi after ultraviolet (UV) irradiation have been studied in detail. In contrast, the impact of UV irradiation on electrical impedance spectroscopy scores of nevi has not been investigated. However, for physicians, it is essential to know the extent to which changes in electrical impedance spectroscopy scores of nevi may be attributed to sea...

UV irradiation of African green monkey cells greatly stimulated efficiency of simian virus 40 induction from simian virus 40-transformed Syrian hamster cells after cell fusion. The maximum inducing activity was observed at 15 to 20 h after irradiation but remained only transiently. The addition of cycloheximide after UV irradiation eliminated the stimulation of the activity.

UV irradiation has been shown to activate the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) long terminal repeat (LTR) in cell culture; however, only limited studies have been described in vivo. UV light has been categorized as UV-A (400 to 315 nm), -B (315 to 280 nm), or -C (less than 280 nm); the longer wavelengths are less harmful but more penetrative. Highly penetrative UV-A radiation constit...
