INTRODUCTION An environmental impact assessment (EIA) before embarking on any project is a useful tool to reduce the potential effects of each project, including landfill, if possible. The main objective of this study was to assess the environmental impact of the current municipal solid waste disposal site of Gonabad by using the Iranian Leopold matrix method. METHODS This cross-sectional stu...

Designing environmentally safe and economically feasible landfills can be a challenging engineering task due to complex interactions that need to be taken into account between landfill size, waste and site characteristics. Performance-based landfill design enables the selection of the most appropriate design components and design details of a landfill to obtain the best overall performance with...

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Terms as ‘landfill stability’ and ‘final storage quality’ are very often used in discussions about sustainable landfill and groundwater protection at landfills. Internationally accepted definitions of these terms are not available. Consequently there is also no shared notion of sustainable landfill. In a Dutch sustainable landfill project it was proposed that: ‘a landfill is ...

There has been a significant increase in municipal solid waste (MSW) generation in India during the last few decades and its management has become a major issue because the poor waste management practices affect the health and amenity of the cities. In the present study, various physico-chemical parameters of the MSW were analyzed to characterize the waste dumped at Gazipur landfill site in Del...

Open landfill dumping areas for municipal wastes in Asian developing countries have recently received particular attention with regard to environmental pollution problems. Because of the uncontrolled burning of solid wastes, elevated contamination by various toxic chemicals including dioxins and related compounds in these dumping sites has been anticipated. In this study, concentrations of poly...

The selection of municipal solid waste landfills is significant because it controls environmental pollution and its problems. Since site selection is a time-consuming and multifaceted process involving various socio-economic and environmental parameters, it requires expert opinion, extensive information resources, and multi-criteria methods. Therefore, this study was carried out for landfill si...

We report the soil microbial diversity and functional aspects related to degradation of recalcitrant compounds, determined using a metagenomic approach, in a landfill lysimeter prepared with soil from Ghazipur landfill site, New Delhi, India. Metagenomic analysis revealed the presence and functional diversity of complex microbial communities responsible for waste degradation.
