Sir, Since the initial reports of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) in the late 1980s, increasing numbers of such isolates have been identified in centres in both Europe and the U S A . , 2 In 1998, Fujita et al. were the first authors in Japan to describe the isolation of a vancomycin-resistant strain of Enterococcus faecium from a patient with a urinary tract infection. To date, 10 strai...

In vitro susceptibilities of 4,208 enterococci (83% Enterococcus faecalis isolates, 13.6% Enterococcus faecium isolates, and 3.4% isolates of other species) from patients in 27 European countries towards 16 antibiotics were determined. High-level resistance to gentamicin varied by country (range, 1 to 49%; mean, 22.6% +/- 12. 3%) and per species (19.7% E. faecalis isolates, 13.6% E. faecium iso...

To determine patterns of antimicrobial susceptibility among enterococci and to assess molecular characteristics of vancomycin-resistant enterococci, 157 clinical blood isolates of enterococci from 10 hospitals in Cincinnati, Ohio, were prospectively collected during a 6-month period from February to July 1995. The isolates included 108 (69%) E. faecalis isolates, 46 (29%) E. faecium isolates, a...

Enterococcus faecium, E. durans and faecalis species were isolated identified from traditional Urfa cheese samples which produced unpasteurized raw milk. The enterococcal load of the was between 4.4-5.6 log cfu g−1. High-level tetracycline, streptomycin, erythromycin, gentamycin, penicillin resistance determined in isolates. Multiple antibiotic also (20.4%) faecium (16.3%) strains. 36.7% isolat...

OBJECTIVES In a tertiary Greek hospital with no documented vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) infections, a cross-sectional study was conducted in order to determine the degree of VRE faecal carriage among adult patients hospitalized in high-risk units. METHODS Specimens for the surveillance were collected from separate patients in two periods (January-May 1999 and January-May 2003); 258 ...

Seventy-two Enterococcus faecium isolates of different origins highly resistant to nourseothricin and streptomycin were studied. Sequencing of a genomic fragment from two isolates identified a gene cluster, aadE-sat4-aphA-3, which has been isolated recently in staphylococci and Campylobacter coli. Patterns of digested PCR products of aadE-sat4-aphA-3 were identical for all isolates.

BACKGROUND Enterococci, though they are a part of commensal flora, are becoming increasingly important as nosocomial pathogens, due to their inherited and acquired resistances to several antimicrobial agents. In this context, Enterococcus faecium (E.faecium) requires a special mention due to its characteristic of Multidrug Resistance (MDR) and its ability to disseminate. AIM This study was un...

A multiplex PCR for the simultaneous detection of five virulence genes (asa1, gelE, cylA, esp, and hyl) in enterococci was developed. The presence of these genes was investigated in 153 clinical and 118 fecal Enterococcus faecium isolates from inpatients at an increased risk of developing infections (such as patients in intensive care units and hematology wards) from 13 hospitals in eight Europ...

background: the aim of this study was to determine the occurrence of virulence determinants and vancomycin- resistant genes among enterococcus faecalis and e. faecium obtained from various clinical sources. methods: the study was performed on the 280 enterococcal isolated from clinical specimens in hamadan hospitals, western iran in 2012-14. antibiotic susceptibility testing was performed using...

The heat tolerance of 27 Enterococcus faecium isolates in water was studied. Stationary phase cultures including vancomycin resistant and sensitive clinical and food isolates were exposed to heat at 60 degrees, 65 degrees, 71 degrees, and 80 degrees C for one, three, 10, and 30 minutes and the log10 reductions in bacterial counts were determined. Exposure at 71 degrees and 80 degrees C resulted...
