There is growing recognition of the clinical importance of non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), a group of versatile opportunistic bacterial pathogens. We describe the characteristics of NTM isolates in Scotland over an 11-year period using data held by the Scottish Mycobacteria Reference Laboratory. American Thoracic Society microbiological criteria were used to evaluate the clinical significan...

Non-tuberculous mycobacterial infection (NMI) occurs in elderly women with no pre-existing lung disease, and this has been termed the Lady Windermere syndrome. NMIs are increasing in prevalence and an increasing number of pulmonary mycobacterial infections is due to non-tuberculous mycobacteria. The diagnosis is often difficult because the organism is not readily isolated or cultured, and the c...

Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are commonly found in the environment. As exposure to environmental mycobacteria has been reported to immunomodulatory in this study, the presence of environmental mycobacteria was investigated in soil, drinking water and drainage sample in Ghatampur, India, which is known for high endemicity for leprosy. Soil, drinking water from the hand pumps/wells and also...

Mycobacterium neoaurum is a rare cause of bacteremia, and infection usually occurs in an immunocompromised host in the setting of an indwelling catheter. Prosthetic valve endocarditis due to non-tuberculous mycobacteria typically carries a dismal prognosis; we report a case of M. neoaurum prosthetic valve endocarditis with favorable response to antimicrobial therapy without surgical intervention.

Abstract Respiratory infections caused by non‐tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are a major cause of morbidity for patients living with cystic fibrosis (CF), as NTM pulmonary disease (NTM‐PD) is challenging to both diagnose and eradicate. Despite the lengthy courses established regimens recommended Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) European Society (ECFS) consensus guidelines, only about 50% 60% ac...

In this manuscript we apply stochastic modeling to investigate the risk of reactivation of latent mycobacterial infections in patients undergoing treatment with tumor necrosis factor inhibitors. First, we review the perspective proposed by one of the authors in a previous work and which consists in predicting the occurrence of reactivation of latent tuberculosis infection or newly acquired tube...

There has been an increase in the number of pulmonary infections caused by non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) in the non HIV-infected population with a heightened awareness clinically and in the laboratory of the significance of these respiratory isolates and newer identification techniques. As far as we are aware, this is the first case report of pulmonary Mycobacteium szulgai infection in Ire...

Purpose Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) are non-tuberculous mycobacteria that are ubiquitously found in nature and can cause progressive pulmonary disease, superficial lymphadenitis, and disseminated infection in immunocompromised individuals. In this report, we present a case of disseminated MAC cutaneous disease in a patient with mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) on immunosuppressive t...

BACKGROUND African buffaloes are the maintenance host for Mycobacterium bovis in the endemically infected Kruger National Park (KNP). The infection is primarily spread between buffaloes via the respiratory route, but it is not known whether shedding of M. bovis in nasal and oral excretions may lead to contamination of ground and surface water and facilitate the transmission to other animal spec...

The risk for humans to contract bovine tuberculosis through the consumption of undercooked game meat as well as biltong (traditionally dried game meat) is a concern. The survival potential of Mycobacterium bovis during the cooking and drying processes was researched in a preceding study on beef and the positive results compelled the authors to investigate the results with a similar preliminary ...
