We used an enzyme immunoassay to determine the normal reference intervals for thyroxin, triiodothyronine, and thyrotropin in groups of children, ranging from newborns to 15-year-olds. Results compared well with those by radioimmunoassay. There were no substantial differences between plasma and serum samples for thyroxin and triiodothyronine, but thyrotropin concentrations differed significantly...

Antisera to triiodothyronine were shown to contain large quantities of the hormone, well in excess of normal circulating concentrations. Extracting the triiodothyronine from the antiserum with alkaline ethanol yielded an antibody of increased affinity. Use of this antibody in a radioimmunoassay resulted in a fourfold increase in sensitivity as compared with the unextracted material.

In normal mouse mammary epithelium, insulin, cortisol, and prolactin are absolute requirements for mouse mammary tumor virus expression. Retinoic acid further increased mouse mammary tumor virus expression two- to threefold but only when triiodothyronine was also present; neither retinoic acid nor triiodothyronine alone had any effect.

In 1950 and 1951 two unknown radioiodinebearing compounds were observed (1-3) on chromatograms of plasma obtained from animals treated with I'31. Gross and Pitt-Rivers (4) identified one of these as 3,5,3'-l-triiodothyronine, which they had previously isolated (5) from the plasma of euthyroid and hyperthyroid individuals treated with 131". They excluded the possibility of analytical or radiatio...

When small numbers of Brucella melitensis were inoculated into ABC mice, occasional hepatic granulomas without necrosis were demonstrated. The greatest multiplication of brucellae was detected in the spleens. Because it had been previously observed that ACTH or cortisone markedly accelerated the multiplication of brucellae in the livers of infected mice with destruction of liver cells, it was c...

Plasma thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) concentrations obtained during the first four years of treatment in 418 children with congenital hypothyroidism, identified by neonatal screening, were examined in relation to paired measurements of plasma thyroxine (n = 1945), free thyroxine (n = 836), triiodothyronine (n = 480), and free triiodothyronine (n = 231), and estimated daily dose of thyroxine...

The method used in this report is based on the immunological production of a specific antisera to tnlodothyronine (T3) in rabbits. Conducted at 4 #{176}C, the radioimmunoassay requires three to five days to complete. Hoping to speed this assay, we investigated the influence of time, temperature, and pH. Incubation at 37 #{176}C and pH 8.0 for 30 mm did not deleteriously affect either precision,...

We examined the effect of anti-triiodothyronine autoantibodies on results of RIA of free triiodothyronine with two commercial kits (Amersham International and Diagnostic Products Corp.). Both methods gave falsely high results because the 125I-labeled analogs used in these RIAs were bound by the autoantibodies.
