In large and continuous state-action spaces reinforcement learning heavily relies on function approximation techniques. Tile coding is a well-known function approximator that has been successfully applied to many reinforcement learning tasks. In this paper we introduce the hyperplane tile coding, in which the usual tiles are replaced by parameterized hyperplanes that approximate the action-valu...

In this paper we formalize the concept of square tiles with colored corners, a new kind of tiles closely related to Wang tiles. We construct aperiodic sets of square tiles with colored corners and several new aperiodic sets of Wang tiles using isomorphisms between tilings. The smallest aperiodic set of square tiles with colored corners we have created consists of 44 tiles over 6 colors.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS First of all, I would like to express my special and sincere gratitude to my advisor Dr. George Vachtsevanos for his persistent guidance and trust throughout my research. His enthusiasm for the career affected me greatly. I would also like to thank my co-advisor Dr. Bonnie Heck-Ferri and Wayne Daley, my project supervisor, for their support and technical discussions. Secondly, ...

We introduce and study the number of tilings of unit height rectangles with irrational tiles. We prove that the class of sequences of these numbers coincides with the class of diagonals of N-rational generating functions and a class of certain binomial multisums. We then give asymptotic applications and establish connections to hypergeometric functions and Catalan numbers.

In this paper we present a construction of Kari-Culik aperiodic tile set — the smallest known until now. With the help of this construction, we prove that this tileset has positive entropy. We also explain why this result was not expected.

We give the inflation rules for the decorated Mosseri–Sadoc tiles in the projection class of tilings T . Dehn invariants related to the stone inflation of the Mosseri–Sadoc tiles provide eigenvectors of the inflation matrix with eigenvalues equal to τ = 1+ √ 5 2 and (−τ).

In this paper we study the power of a model of tile self-assembly in which individual tiles of the system have the ability to turn on or off glue types based on the bonding of other glues on the given tile. This work is motivated by the desire for a system that can effect recursive self assembly, and is guided by the consideration of a DNA origami implementation of four-sided tiles which have a...

P, adioactive S-alkyl glycerol ethers have been synlhesized with 3SS, 14C and 3tt labels as well as 311/35S double labels. Tile synthesized compounds were converted to various derivatives which can serve to characterize tile S-alkyl glycerol ethers. These included tile isopropylidene derivative, oxidation with periodate to the aldehyde followed by reduction with LiAIH4 to tile alcohol, and reac...

Self-assembly is fundamental to both biological processes and nanoscience. Key features of self-assembly are its probabilistic nature and local programmability. These features can be leveraged to design better self-assembled systems. The conventional Tile Assembly Model (TAM) developed by Winfree using Wang tiles is a powerful, Turing-universal theoretical framework which models varied self-ass...
