Mooers (1999) defined ”coastal ocean” to include a 200 nautical mile wide Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), determined by United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). This covers a major part of the European coastal seas (Mediterranean, North Sea, Irish Sea, Baltic Sea) and part of European shelf seas. Since EEZ is also of high national interests in marine resource exploitation and en...
During the last years, great effort has been addressed by several authors to simulate the propagation of solitary waves/ tsunamis, tides or surges, due to the tremendous damages and losses of human lives in the inundated rural and residential areas. Tsunamis are sea waves usually generated by undersea landslides and earthquakes. They can be regarded as long/solitary waves with small amplitude a...
In this paper, we present new multi-year and 72-day mean seasonal-latitudinal tidal structures in exospheric temperature derived from joint analysis of CHAMP and GRACE accelerometer measurements. These results include diurnal tides DE3, DE2, D0, and DW2 and semidiurnal tides S0, SE1, SE2, SE3, SW4, and SW6. We also employ Hough mode extensions (HMEs) and the Climatological Model of Thermosphere...
In this talk, we review some recent advances in the theory of dynamic tides in close binaries. We particularly focus on the effects of resonances of dynamic tides with free oscillation modes and on the role of dynamic tides in the comparison of theoretically predicted and observationally inferred apsidalmotion rates.
This study was performed to compare storm surges simulated by the operational storm surges/tide forecast system (STORM : Storm surges/Tide Operational Model) of the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) with observations from 30 coastal tidal stations during nine typhoons that occurred between 2005 and 2007. The results (bias) showed that for cases of overestimation (or underestimation), st...
Abstract. Global warming, one of the most serious aspects climate change, can be expected to cause rising sea levels. These have in turn been linked unprecedentedly large typhoons that flooding low-lying land, coastal invasion, seawater flows into rivers and groundwater, river levels, aberrant tides. To prevent typhoon-related loss life property damage, it is crucial accurately estimate storm-s...
The Ganges–Brahmaputra–Meghna Delta (GBMD) located in the head of Bay Bengal is regularly affected by severe tropical cyclones frequently. GBMD covers Bangladesh coast, which one most vulnerable areas world due to cyclone-induced storm surges. More than 30% total country’s population lives on coast. Hence, it crucial understand underlying processes that modulate surge height GBMD. A barotropic ...
The lunar semidiurnal barometric tide Lz and the solar 2 4 , 12-, and &hr. oscillations of the surface pressure have been determined for 10 stations in Australia and on adjacent islands. At Rabaul and Moresby L2 is considerably smaller than elsewhere in these latitudes. The characteristic annual variation of the phase-late high tide during the D season-is found a t most Australian stations. But...
This research integrates theoretical frameworks of risk perception, social amplification of risk, and the role of place-specific contexts in order to explore the various perceptions surrounding Florida red tides. Florida red tides are naturally occurring events that are increasing in frequency, duration, and severity. This has implications for public health, the local economy, and ecosystem hea...
