[Purpose] This study was conducted to assess the physical fitness of children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA). [Subjects and Methods] In total, 26 children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) and 25 healthy controls participated in this study. Using the physical fitness measurement instruments, the Inbody 720 and Quark b2, the elements of physical fitness that were assessed includ...
Background As humans age, there is a measurable loss of muscle mass that occurs. Termed sarcopenia, this condition not only results in a loss of muscle mass, but also results in a loss of muscular strength and endurance (Bales, 2002). Research has shown that resistance training decreases this loss of muscle mass and muscular strength (Doherty, 2003). However, in older populations, little eviden...
BACKGROUND Shoulder muscle fatigue has been proposed as a possible link to explain the association between repetitive arm use and the development of rotator cuff disorders. To our knowledge, no standardized clinical endurance protocol has been developed to evaluate the effects of muscle fatigue on shoulder function. Such a test could improve clinical examination of individuals with shoulder dis...
Background Energy supplements are frequently consumed by athletes and recreational fitness enthusiasts as a method of improving exercise performance. Recent research indicates that these types of supplements influence exercise performance by increasing the number of repetitions that can be performed during an acute bout of exercise, thus increasing the total volume of work that can be performed...
BACKGROUND The purpose of current study is to evaluate the association between physical fitness level and the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) in a Korean elderly population. METHODS A cross-sectional study measuring physical fitness and components of MS in a health promotion center of a general hospital for routine health check-ups. A total of 227 subjects >60 years old agreed to partic...
BACKGROUND Up-to-date research on musculoskeletal- and neuromotor fitness (MSMF) is lacking. The aims of the present paper were to a) establish normative values of MSMF by gender and age, and b) to assess how much of the variance in MSMF can be explained by obesity in adults. METHODS A random selection of 726 Norwegians (20-65 years) participated in a national cross-sectional study. Muscular ...
Eighteen boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy were entered into trials to assess the effects of specific ventilatory strength and endurance training programmes. The findings showed an improvement in ventilatory muscle endurance but not in strength as a result of specific respiratory muscle training. The clinical significance of these findings is uncertain, however, and needs further evaluation.
