We have examined the crystal structures and structural phase transitions of the deuterated, partially deuterated and hydrogenous organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite methyl ammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) using time-of-flight neutron and synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. Near 330 K the high temperature cubic phases transformed to a body-centered tetragonal phase. The variation of the order par...

The low-temperature orthorhombic (LTO) phase transition in La 2−x Sr x CuO 4 can be interpreted as a dynamic Jahn-Teller effect, in which the degenerate electronic states are associated with the large densities of states at the two van Hove singularities. The equations describing this phase are strongly nonlinear. This paper illustrates some consequences of the nonlinearity, by presenting a ric...

The effect of pressure on the crystalline structure and superconducting transition temperature (T(c)) of the 111-type Na(1-x)FeAs system using in situ high-pressure synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction and diamond anvil cell techniques is studied. A pressure-induced tetragonal to tetragonal isostructural phase transition was found. The systematic evolution of the FeAs(4) tetrahedron as a functi...

In this paper, the phase formation process of Mn2.5Ge samples, prepared by mechanical alloying of Mn and Ge metal powders and annealing, has been studied. Results showed that in the milled samples the stable phase is Mn11Ge8 compound with orthorhombic structure and Pnam space group. The value of saturation magnetization increases by increasing milling time from 0.2 up to 1.95 (Am2Kg-1). The rem...

The crystal structure and electrical resistance of structurally layered EuFe(2)As(2) have been studied up to 70 GPa and down to a temperature of 10 K, using a synchrotron x-ray source and designer diamond anvils. The room temperature compression of the tetragonal phase of EuFe(2)As(2) (I4/mmm) results in an increase in the a-axis length and a rapid decrease in the c-axis length with increasing ...

Using high resolution x-ray diffraction (XRD) on high purity powders, we resolved the structure and ab symmetry of the intriguing compound Sr2VO4 from room temperature down to 20 K to an unprecedented level of accuracy. Upon cooling, this set of data unambiguously reveals a second-order phase transition lowering the symmetry from tetragonal to orthorhombic at a temperature Tc2 = 136 K. The obse...

Degradation of yttria-stabilized zirconia dental implants abutments due to the tetragonal to monoclinic phase transformation was studied in detail by microstructural characterization using Electron Back Scatter Diffraction (EBSD). The amount and distribution of the monoclinic phase, the grain-size distribution and crystallographic orientations between tetragonal and monoclinic crystals in 3 mol...

A phase diagram of temperature versus strain was constructed for a (001)-oriented PbZr1 xTixO3 epitaxial single crystal thin film near the bulk morphotropic boundary composition (x5 0.47) on an (001)-oriented cubic substrate. The phase-field approach is employed. It is shown that a mixture of distorted rhombohedral, orthorhombic, and tetragonal phases exists under small values of strain, i.e., ...

The connection between electronic and structural degrees of freedom—whether successive, coincident, or causal—suffuses the study of phase transitions. The Shastry– Sutherland model of a planar network of coupled spin dimers (1) and its physical realization in SrCu2(BO3)2 (SCBO) provide a fundamental quantum mechanical test of this connection at the onset of antiferromagnetic order. We summarize...

A finite element approximation of the thin film limit for a sharp interface bulk energy for martensitic crystals is given. The energy density models the softening of the elastic modulus controlling the low-energy path from the cubic to the tetragonal lattice, the loss of stability of the tetragonal phase at high temperatures and the loss of stability of the cubic phase at low temperatures, and ...
