Intraluminal pressure change in the pharyngeal phase of swallowing was measured by the station pull-through method, in which a pressure transducer probe was being withdrawn at each 1 cm step from a segment 25 to 8 cm from the nostril. The probe had an outside diameter of 5.0 mm in size and was loaded with two miniature pressure transducers 3 cm apart from each other. Electromyogram of the supra...

Volitional swallowing in humans involves the coordination of both brainstem and cerebral swallowing control regions. Peripheral sensory inputs are necessary for safe and efficient swallowing, and their importance to the patterned components of swallowing has been demonstrated. However, the role of sensory inputs to the cerebral system during volitional swallowing is less clear. We used four con...

We report a video-electroencephalogram study of a 50-year-old woman who developed a clinical picture consisting of stereotyped periodic eye opening followed by eye closing, with or without swallowing movements, after a prolonged cardiopulmonary arrest. These movements were associated with a burst-suppression pattern on the electroencephalogram. [Published with video sequences].
