[1] Dynamic triggering around the Fangshan Pluton near Beijing is repeatedly identified. Here we report clear triggered events in this region during the surface waves of the 2012 Mw8.6 Sumatra earthquake. However, we do not find any triggered events during the G2 waves of the Mw8.6 event, and the surface waves of the Mw8.2 Sumatra earthquake that occurred two hours later. The peak ground veloci...

Near-surface scattering can contaminate the arrival of energy from target reflectors. We developed a 3D wave-theoretical method, as a multi-channel alternative for short-wavelength static corrections, that was successfully tested on laboratory data, excited and monitored with a computer controlled, non-contacting system.

We perform experiments on the sloshing dynamics of liquids in a rectangular container submitted to an impulse. We show that when foam is placed on top of the liquid the oscillations of the free interface are significantly damped. The ability to reduce sloshing and associated splashing could find applications in numerous industrial processes involving liquid transport. When a container is set in...

In this article, we consider the two-dimensional dissipative Boussinesq systems which model surface waves in three space dimensions. The long time asymptotics of the solutions for a large class of such systems are obtained rigorously for small initial data.

A model consisting of a mixed Kuramoto-Sivashinsky-Kortewegde Vries equation, linearly coupled to an extra linear dissipative equation has been proposed in [1] in order to describe the surface waves on multi-layered liquid films and stability criteria are discussed using wave mode analysis. In this paper, we study the linear stability of solutions to the model from the viewpoint of energy estim...

The interaction of solitary waves on shallow water is examined to fourth order. At first order the interaction is governed by the Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) equation, and it is shown that the unidirectional assumption, of right-moving waves only, is incompatible with mass conservation at third order. To resolve this, a mass conserving system of KdV equations, involving both rightand left-moving wa...

A class of boundary value problems arising in the study of scattering of surface water waves by barriers, under the assumption of the linearized theory, is reduced to singular integral equations of the first kind, involving only ”weakly singular” kernels. The unified treatment presented here is observed to be most suitable to handle the class of scattering problems under consideration and it is...

Approximate surface fields due to a plane-wave solution and a local-mode solution are compared. The plane-wave solution, which is new, is shown to agree well with experiment. The local-mode solution, which often has been applied to tapered waveguides and antennas, fails near the cutoffs of the surface waves.

Consider a uniform train of surface waves with a two-dimensional, bi-periodic surface pattern, propagating on deep water. One approximate model of the evolution of these waves is a pair of coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations, which neglects any dissipation of the waves. We show that in this model, such a wave train is linearly unstable to small perturbations in the initial data, because of ...
