In a previous work our group showed that some synthetic stigmastanes may play a role in immune-mediated inflammation. In this paper we report the syntheses of a series of new steroidal compounds derived from dehydroepiandrosterone and stigmasterol, and the evaluation of their in vitro inhibitory activity of the TNF-alpha production by macrophages. A preliminary qualitative structure-activity re...

Acetylmelodorinol, chrysin and polycarpol, together with benzoic acid, benzoquinone and stigmasterol were isolated from the leaves of Mitrella kentii (Bl.) Miq. The compounds were evaluated for their ability to inhibit prostaglandin E₂ (PGE₂) and thromboxane B₂ (TXB₂) production in human whole blood using a radioimmunoassay technique. Their inhibitory effect on platelet activating factor (PAF) ...

BACKGROUND Increased serum concentrations of plant sterols, including stigmasterol, during parenteral nutrition (PN) have been linked with serum biochemical signs of intestinal failure-associated liver disease (IFALD), whereas clinical data on their correlation to histologic liver injury have been limited. OBJECTIVE We studied interrelations between serum noncholesterol sterols and histologic...

A flavones glycoside isolated from the bark of ayurvedic plant, Nyctanthes arbortristis was subjected to various pharmacological studies. The glycoside was found to be effective on, cardiovascular system and smooth muscles of intestine but no significant effect was found on CNS. The glycoside exhibited promising anti-inflammatory activity.

The characteristics of the lipid matrix surrounding sterols exert a great influence in their thermal oxidation process. The objective of this work was to assess the oxidation susceptibility of equal amounts of cholesterol and stigmasterol within a sunflower oil lipid matrix (ratio 1:1:200) during heating (180°C, 0-180min). Remaining percentage of sterols was determined and seven sterol oxidatio...

An investigation on biologically active secondary metabolites from the stem bark of Mesua beccariana was carried out. A new cyclodione, mesuadione, along with several known constituents which are beccamarin, 2,5-dihydroxy-1,3,4-trimethoxy anthraquinone, 4-methoxy-1,3,5-trihydroxyanthraquinone, betulinic acid and stigmasterol were obtained from this ongoing research. Structures of these compound...

A new solanocapsine-type tomato glycoside, a novel and interesting natural steroidal glycoside, was isolated from a mini tomato, Solanum lycopersicum L. The chemical structure of the new minor glycoside, esculeoside B-5 (3), was determined to be (5S,22R,23S,24R,25S)-22,26-epimino-16β,23-epoxy-3β,23,24-trihydroxycholestane 3-O-β-lycotetraoside.

Several C-glycoside ketones and peracetylated C-glycoside ketones have been synthesized from 13 structurally-diverse aldoses sugars (including isotope labeled [1-(13)C]Glc, [U-(13)C]Glc, and [6, 6'-(2)H(2)]Glc) via an aqueous-based Knoevanagel condensation with aliphatic 1,3-diketones. Sodium adduct molecular ions observed by MALDI-TOF MS confirmed that the reactions are essentially quantitativ...

Poisoning with cardiac glycoside-containing plants is collectively the most important plant-associated poisoning of livestock in southern Africa. As a diagnosis of this significant poisoning is currently based on circumstantial evidence, a practical chemical procedure indicating the presence of cardiac glycosides in plants and animal specimens would be of considerable benefit. The fluorescence ...

Two known steroids, stigmasterol and 6b-hydroxystigmasta-4,22-dien-3-one (1) and two unusual polyketides, cis-4-hydroxymellein (2) and trans-4-hydroxymellein (3) were isolated from the stem bark of Uvaria hamiltonii. The structures of the compounds were elucidated independently by high-resolution 2D-NMR techniques and confirmed by comparison with previously reported values.
