Metarhizium anisopliae var. acridum (IMI 330189) can produce at least three spore types in vitro ; blastospores, submerged conidia, and aerial conidia, as defined by culturing conditions, sporogenesis, and spore morphology. This study compares morphological characteristics (dimensions and cell wall structure), chemical properties of cell wall surfaces (charge, hydrophobicity, and lectin binding...
The widespread search for new antibioticproducing Streptomyces unleashed during the last two decades also brought with it the problems of their classification. In the early attempts at species differentiation excessive use was made of highly variable cultural and physiological properties as taxonomic criteria and too little attention was paid the more stable morphological characteristics. Howev...
The draft genome for the type strain Streptomyces phaeoluteigriseus DSM41896 (ISP 5182) is reported. It was classified as a member of the Streptomyces violaceusniger clade; however, a polyphasic study showed it was a separate species based on its distinct spore morphology and 16S rRNA sequence. The genome sequence confirms it as a separate species.
A new highly pathogenic muscle-infecting species of the genus Myxobolus Bütschli, 1882 is described from the Prussian carp, Carassius gibelio (Bloch, 1782) using spore morphology and SSU rDNA sequence data. Phylogenetic analyses elucidated relationship of the newly described Myxobolus lentisuturalis to other Myxobolus species and supported its position of an independent species.
Diatom resting spores are a widespread, but sometimes misconstrued component of siliceous micro fossil assemblages. We illustrate and discuss resting spore morphology found in populations of Acanthoceras and Urosolenia, two widely distributed freshwater genera. Taxonomic status of these genera and the potential paleolimnologic interpretation of resting spores are discussed.
The significance of Bacillus anthracis as an agent of bioterrorism has been well established. An understanding of both the pathogenesis and the host response is required to elucidate approaches to more rapidly detect and effectively prevent or treat anthrax. Current vaccine strategies are focused primarily on production of antibodies against the protective antigen components of the anthrax toxi...
