Creatinine in serum or urine is determined by Jaffe's reaction where creatinine produces quantitatively an orange color with picric acid in alkaline medium. After allowing an incubation time of 15 min at room temperature for color development the color is measured at 520 nm. Without taking into consideration the acidic nature of standard, protein free filtrate (PFF) of serum and urine, 1% picri...

During our attempts to reevaluate and improve mycobacteriology laboratory procedures, we found that isolation of mycobacteria from undecontaminated specimens through the use of selective media was unrewarding and that specimen decontamination was an essential step. A reevaluation of the N-acetyl-L-cysteine-sodium hydroxide (NALC-NaOH) decontamination procedure (G. P. Kubica, W. E. Dye, M. L. Co...

Soybean meal (SBM) was treated with acid or alkali to determine effects on N solubility, in vitro NH3-N accumulation, in situ N degradability, and N digestion and retention in growing lambs. The following SBM treatments resulted in decreased (P less than .05) N solubility and in vitro NH3-N accumulation compared with control SBM: spraying with 2.5 or 5% acetic or propionic acid, soaking in .5 N...

Abstract: In recent years, many research works have been done to investigate the possibility of utilizing a broad range of materials as raw materials in the production of geopolymer cements. The use of artificial pozzolans or aluminosilicate-type industrial waste materials such as granulated blast-furnace slag and fly ash has been reported in many research works. Natural pozzolans are also al...

Chemical treatments can remove waxes and sugar components from the surface of bio-fibres, increasing their compatibility with mineral binders. This paper investigates effects alkali solutions on miscanthus shives. For 8, 24, 48 h, fibres were immersed in NaOH at 1.5, 2.5, 5.0% concentrations, without a 2.5% sodium silicate solution, having silica modulus (SiO2/Na2O) 2.0. SEM Fourier Transform I...

BACKGROUND A two-stage chemical pretreatment of corn stover is investigated comprising an NaOH pre-extraction followed by an alkaline hydrogen peroxide (AHP) post-treatment. We propose that conventional one-stage AHP pretreatment can be improved using alkaline pre-extraction, which requires significantly less H2O2 and NaOH. To better understand the potential of this approach, this study investi...

The normality dependence and the kinetics of flow behavior in the rice starch dispersion under strong alkali conditions were studied. Non-Newtonian flow (power-law) quantities n and μ (σ = μ(̇); σ: shear stress, ̇: shear rate) of the samples stored (gelatinized) at 20◦C for 10min after the addition of NaOH solution with the normality 0.090 0.175N, were measured by a cone-plate type rotational v...

Introduction Titanium and its alloys have excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility. In the field of dentistry, smooth surfaced titanium implants inserted into the facial bones perform very well. After implantation, well-fixed dental implants, which are not subjected to weight loading during some period after implantation, exhibit direct contact with bone without intervening fibrous ...

this thesis attempts to investigate the effects of prelistening activities on enhancing iranian efl learners` listening comprehension. the present study investigated ways in which learners` background knowledge could be activated in order to enhance their l2 listening comprehension by limiting the number of possible text interpretations prior to listening. the experiments conducted in this study examined the effect of prior knowledge and vocabulary teaching on iranian efl learners listening comprehension. the current study has two purposes: one is to investigate the effect of background knowledge on the second language listening comprehension of iranian intermediates and the other is to determine whether second language is facilitated by the introduction of unknown vocabularies in the form of prelistening activities. to conduct the study different instruments such as listening proficiency test and four listening tests such as pre and posttests were used and various statistical processes and techniques including paired-sample t-test, and analysis of variance (anova) were used. the findings of this study supported all three hypotheses tested. differences were found between the means of preteaching vocabulary variable, the background knowledge activation variable, and mean difference between these two strategies variable. subjects scored higher when the unknown words were taught in advance. likewise, subjects scored higher when they were asked some relevant questions about the topic than on those without them. there was, in addition, a significant difference between the means of preteaching vocabulary strategy and background knowledge activation strategy. in fact, preteaching vocabulary had a better effect in enhancing the students’ listening comprehension, in comparison to background knowledge activation strategy.
