Two tungsten disulfide (WS₂)-based core-shell nanocomposites were fabricated using readily available reagents and simple procedures. The surface was pre-treated with a surfactant couple in a layer-by-layer approach, enabling good dispersion of the WS₂ nanostructures in aqueous media and providing a template for the polymerization of a silica (SiO₂) shell. After a Stöber-like reaction, a conform...
The synthesis via in situ polymerization and characterization of nanocomposites (NCs) made from silica (SiO(2)) nanoparticles in a methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer matrix is reported. We first investigate the transfer of well-defined spherical silica nanoparticles (NPs) (average radius R = 24.2 ± 3.2 nm) into the monomer solvent. We study the influence of two transfer methods and different sur...
In this article we report on the controlled synthesis of asymmetric lemon-shaped and dumbbell-shaped multi-compartment nanoparticles (MCPs) with a reactive surface and interesting morphology. In our approach we utilize partial coating of hematite ellipsoids with a hydrophobic polymer layer followed by selective silica deposition on the non-coated surface. Ellipsoidal hematite particles provide ...
The present study focuses on the use of copolymer nanoparticles as a dispersant for a model pigment (silica). Reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) alcoholic dispersion polymerization was used to synthesize sterically stabilized diblock copolymer nanoparticles. The steric stabilizer block was poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMA) and the core-forming block was poly(...
An innovative methodology for the preparation of high-performance polyolefin-based materials combining a unique dendrimeric silica carrier, straightforward in situ supporting procedure and ethylene polymerization technique was developed.
Silica biomineralization associated with unicellular microbes (Cyanidium caldarium) living in strongly acidic hot springs were observed by electron microscopy. The unicellular microbes form green biomats undergoing photosynthesis in Kamuiwakka Falls, Hokkaido, Japan. The hot-spring water is strongly acidic, with pH less than 2, and rich in S. Electron microscopy observations showed that the cel...
We demonstrate that Au-silica-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA) trilayer composite particles with controllable thickness of PNIPA out-layer can be developed via free radical polymerization using Au-silica core-shell particles as seed. The presence of Au-silica particles does not influence of thermosensitivity of PNIPA shell, which exhibits a similar swelling behavior as pure PNIPA microgels. ...
In this work we report the polymerization behaviour of natural clays (montmorillonites, MMT) as activating supports. These materials have been modified by treatment with different aluminium compounds in order to obtain enriched aluminium clays and to modify the global Brönsted/Lewis acidity. As a consequence, the intrinsic structural properties of the starting materials have been changed. These...
