Serratia fonticola UTAD54 is an environmental isolate that is resistant to carbapenems due to the presence of a class A carbapenemase and a metallo-β-lactamase that are unique to this strain. Its draft genome sequence was obtained to clarify the molecular basis of its carbapenem resistance and identify the genomic context of its carbapenem resistance determinants.

We report here the draft genome sequence of Serratia marcescens ML2637, isolated from a South African pediatric patient in the intensive care unit with peritoneal cancer. The genome comprised 5,718,350 bp, with a 59.1% G+C content. There were 5,594 predicted genes, including 5,301 protein-coding genes, 199 pseudogenes, and 94 RNA genes.

Serratia marcescens WW4 is a biofilm-forming bacterium isolated from paper machine aggregates. Under conditions of phosphate limitation, this bacterium exhibits intergeneric inhibition of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Here, the complete genome sequence of S. marcescens WW4, which consists of one circular chromosome (5,241,455 bp) and one plasmid (pSmWW4; 3,248 bp), was determined.

A bacteriophage (phiIF3) capable of mediating generalized transduction in Serratia marcescens strain Db11 has been isolated and characterized. The genome of this Serratia strain has recently been sequenced and is likely to become the reference strain for S. marcescens researchers. phiIF3 is most likely a virulent phage, which can transduce markers at frequencies of 10(-6) transductants per p.f....

The cell surface hydrophobicity of 10 pigmented and 4 nonpigmented clinical Serratia marcescens strains was studied, based on the ability of the strains to adhere to hydrocarbons and to polystyrene. The cell surface hydrophobicity depended greatly on growth temperature; all of the strains tested were adherent following growth at 30 degrees C, whereas none was adherent following growth at 38 deg...

Serratia marcescens strain ATCC 14041 was found to be an efficient meso-2,3-butanediol (meso-2,3-BD) producer from glucose and sucrose. Here we present a 5.0-Mb assembly of its genome. We have annotated 4 coding sequences (CDSs) for meso-2,3-BD fermentation and 2 complete operons including 6 CDSs for sucrose utilization.

# 2002 International Union of Crystallography Printed in Denmark ± all rights reserved The crystal structure of the inactive D140N mutant of Serratia marcescens was re®ned to 1.45 AÊ resolution. The structure of the mutant was essentially identical to that of the wild type, with the exception of a rotation of Asp142 in the catalytic centre. In the mutant, this residue interacts with the catalyt...

Prodigiosins, a family of natural red pigments characterized by a common pyrrolylpyrromethane skeleton, are produced by various bacteria that first characterized from Serratia marcescens. This pigment is a promising drug owing to its reported characteristics of having antifungal, immunosuppressive and anti-proliferative activity. From an industrial point of view to obtain optimal conditions to ...

Serratia marcescens is one of the most effective bacteria for degradation of chitin, a 1,4-β-linked polymer of N-acetyl-β-Dglucosamine (GlcNAc). Chitinolysis by S. marcescens involves at least four enzymes and a chitin-binding protein. Studies of the enzymology and the structures of the enzymes provide insight in how a natural set of chitinolytic enzymes may be built up. S. marcescens chitinase...
