This paper argues that a semiotic-conceptual framework is suitable for knowledge representation because it combines conceptual structures with semiotic aspects. The advantages of such a framework are discussed and explained using an example from an ontology language.
General abstract: Here we introduce biosemiotics as a field of research that develops models of life processes focusing on their informational aspects. Peirce’s general concept of semiosis can be used to analyze such processes, and provide a powerful basis for understanding the emergence of meaning in living systems, by contributing to the construction of a theory of biological information. 1 Social media are now an integrated part of culture and digitally mediated social activities. Screen-based devices now employ sophisticated graphics including visual movement on a variety of platforms. This paper explores how visually dynamic interfaces can enhance social media applications. A socio-cultural view on communication and interaction design is combined with a practice-based researc...
handicaps to effective introduction of semiotic achievements into software development in the spheres related to human perception such as interfaces, computer languages, DB queries, arise due to the absence of analysis and modeling methods adequate to the complicity of the investigated objects. A formal model that expresses basic semiotic notions in species of structures is presented in the pap...
BACKGROUND Research for ontology evaluation is scarce. If biomedical ontological datasets and knowledgebases are to be widely used, there needs to be quality control and evaluation for the content and structure of the ontology. This paper introduces how to effectively utilize a semiotic-inspired approach to ontology evaluation, specifically towards drug-related ontologies hosted on the National...
Each software entity should have as high quality as possible in the context of limited resources. A software quality measure is a kind of software entity. Existing studies about the evaluation of software measures do not pay enough attention to the quality of specifications of measures. Semiotics has been used as a basis in order to evaluate the quality of different types of software entities. ...
In cognitive neuroscience, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is used to produce images of brain functions. These images play a central role in the practice of neuroscience. In this paper we are interested in how these brain images become understandable and meaningful for scientists. In order to explore this problem we observe how scientists use such semiotic resources as gesture, lan...
E-learning tools design is intended to mediate communication between the student (user) and the software involving teacher intervention. The design process could be taken as a dialogue between teacher and student. Thus, the main actors in the teaching/learning process are involved during the software-design process in this semiotic perspective. We aim to introduce a model for designing e-learni...
Between playing a game and enjoying a narration there is a semiotic and semantic common ground: interpretation and meaning-making. A semiotic methodology to describe situated gaming practices will be presented in three phases. At first, the intuitive concept of "meaning" will be discussed and substituted by the generative semiotic notion of "content". Then the structuralist semiotic notion of "...
This contribution gives an overview about different approaches to semantic spaces. It is not a exhaustive survey, but rather a personal view on different approaches which use metric spaces for the representation of meanings of linguistic units. The aim is to demonstrate the similarities of apparently different approaches and to inspire the generalisation of semantic spaces tailored to the repre...
