2 Annual and quarterly data on German GDP are decomposed into a nonstationary trend, a stationary cycle and a seasonal component using Kalman filtering and smoothing techniques. The computed trend components of the unobserved component models are then used to calculate annual and quarterly output gap measures for the German economy.

In this paper, we investigate eligibility of trend extraction through the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and performance improvement of applying the ensemble EMD (EEMD) instead of the EMD for trend extraction from seasonal time series. The proposed method is an approach that can be applied on any time series with any time scales fluctuations. In order to evaluate our algorithm, experimental...

In the paper we consider the role of seasonal intercepts in seasonal cointegration analysis. For the nonseasonal unit root, such intercepts can generate a stochastic trend with a drift common to all observations. For the seasonal unit roots, however, we show that unrestricted seasonal intercepts generate trends that are diierent across the seasons. Since such seasonal trends may not appear in e...

BACKGROUND There are few quantitative documents about the seasonal incidence of tuberculosis (TB) among immigrant populations. Concerning the significant role of recognizing seasonal changes of TB in improving the TB control program, this study determines the trend and seasonal temporal changes of TB among immigrants entering Iran. METHODS In this longitudinal study, data from the Iranian TB ...

INTRODUCTION The seasonal variability in hospitalization for tuberculosis may in part relate to super-imposed bacterial or predisposing respiratory viral infections. We aimed to study the temporal association between hospitalization for culture-confirmed pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB), invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) and influenza virus epidemics in South African children. METHODS We undert...

BACKGROUND Seasonal depression has generated considerable clinical interest in recent years. Despite a common belief that people in higher latitudes are more vulnerable to low mood during the winter, it has never been demonstrated that human's moods are subject to seasonal change on a global scale. The aim of this study was to investigate large-scale seasonal patterns of depression using Intern...

1. Analysis of the division rates of Paramecium aurelia (mutant), Blepharisma undulans, and Histrio complanatus grown separately in pedigree isolation culture with the same culture medium, and in the same room at any given time, for a period of 3 years, discloses a secular trend and a seasonal rhythm for each organism. The seasonal rhythm is a yearly cycle with a maximum during July. 2. After r...

While satellite-based monitoring of vegetation activity at the earth’s surface is of vital importance for many eco-climatological applications, the degree of agreement among certain sensors and products providing estimates of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) has been found to vary considerably. In order to assess the extent of such differences in highly heterogeneous terrain, w...

Dust is referred to sediments of less than 100 microns in size which are transmitted as suspended particles. Dust storms are events which naturally occur in arid and semi-arid areas, especially in subtropical latitudes. One of the most known sources of dust is the west of Asia, including Arabian Peninsula, Syria, Iraq, and Iran, especially Khuzestan Province. The purpose of this study is to inv...
