Purpose. To evaluate the efficacy of autologous tenon grafting combined with conjunctival flap as a treatment for scleromalacia or scleral thinning after pterygium excision without any additional donor graft tissue. Methods. Twenty-six cases underwent autologous advanced tenon grafting combined with sliding or rotating conjunctival flap for scleromalacia after pterygium surgery ranging from 2 y...

PURPOSE To determine the in vitro permeability of the sclera to high molecular weight compounds and the relationship between scleral permeability and molecular size. METHODS Fresh rabbit sclera was mounted in a two-chamber diffusion apparatus, and its permeability to sodium fluorescein, fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-conjugated bovine serum albumin, FITC-IgG, and FITC dextrans ranging in m...

The scleral spur and scleral roll together form a fibrous hoop which may be detached from adjacent structures as a unit. Tensile tests of the spur-roll resemble reported data on sclera. It is proposed that the circular structure of the spur-roll prevents action of the meridional portion of the ciliary muscle on the trabecular meshwork from collapsing the canal of Schlemm.

Posterior scleral tuberculoma formation is an extremely rare condition. The few reports on scleral involvement in tuberculosis refer to cases of anterior scleritis. In the present manuscript we describe a patient who had rheumatoid arthritis and developed a large posterior scleral tuberculoma. The lesion provoked retinal detachment and visual loss and was diagnosed only after enucleation due to...

Scleral buckling is a highly successful technique for the repair of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment that requires intra-operative examination of the retina and treatment of retinal breaks via indirect ophthalmoscopy. Data suggest that scleral buckling likely results in improved outcomes for many patients but is declining in popularity, perhaps because of significant advances in vitrectomy ins...

BACKGROUND Scleromalacia, in the form of scleral thinning, melting, and necrosis, is a potentially serious complication of pterygium excision. This study introduces a new biodegradable material, Ologen™ collagen matrix (OCM), to repair scleral thinning as an alternative to preserved scleral tissue, and evaluates the long-term outcomes of OCM for ocular surface reconstruction surgery. CASE PRE...

Scleral contact lens technology had been applied for several years as part of the treatment of ocular surface diseases, as well as for compensation of corneal surface irregularities. In recent years, new scleral lens designs were developed to compensate for current refractive errors. Becoming more widely used, it is crucial to question the long-term effects of their presence on ocular health. O...

The bidirectional laser Doppler technique and monochromatic photography were used to measure the absolute blood flow rate in the major temporal retinal arteries in seven patients following unilateral scleral buckling and encircling procedures, and in two patients before and after removal of scleral buckling elements. In the seven patients who had undergone uncomplicated scleral buckling procedu...

Pneumatic retinopexy is increasingly recommended to treat some patients with retinal detachment to avoid the complication of induced refractive changes sometimes associated with scleral buckling procedures. Prospective evaluation of refractive changes after scleral buckling procedures was performed in 75 eyes of 69 patients. Encircling scleral buckles caused an average increased axial length of...
