Derivational nouns are widely used in Sanskrit corpora and is a prevalent means of productivity in the language. Currently there exists no analyser that identifies the derivational nouns. We propose a semi supervised approach for identification of derivational nouns in Sanskrit. We not only identify the derivational words, but also link them to their corresponding source words. The novelty of o...
We develop an optical character recognition (OCR) engine for handwritten Sanskrit using a two-stage classifier. Inside the standard OCR pipeline, we focus on the classification problem assuming characters have been preprocessed decently. One challenge we face is that the language of Sanskrit has about a hundred core characters where model driven methods, like Support Vector Machine (SVM), have ...
This paper demonstrates that the treatment of nominal derivational morphology in Pān. ini’s grammar of the Sanskrit language (ca. 500BC) is based on an architecture strikingly similar to that of modern inheritance-based lexica. Specifically, Pān. ini adopts a single inheritance network with defaults to account concisely for intricate cases of affix homonymy and affix synonymy with minimal redun...
Research in building robulst NLP systems with ambiguity resolution techniques has gained momentum in recent years. In particular, the anaphora resolution initiatives have reached unpreceented heights in last 10 years or so. Mitkov et. al (2001) have reported both rule based knowledge based approaches and machine learning based ‘knowledge poor’ approaches in an ACL issue devoted to this subject....
The paper describes new layers of linguistic annotation and explorative tools that were added to the project ‘Aṣṭādhyāyī 2.0’. These additions make it possible to execute complex research queries in the digital version of Pāṇini’s grammar with minimal knowledge both of Sanskrit and database query languages. In the project ‘Aṣṭādhyāyī 2.0’, we have developed a digital edition of Pāṇini’s grammar...
Pāṇini’s fourth (?) century BCE Sanskrit grammar uses rewrite rules guided by an explicit and formal metalanguage. The metalanguage makes extensive use of auxiliary markers, in the form of Sanskrit phonemes, to control grammatical derivations. The method of auxiliary markers was rediscovered by Emil Post in the 1920s and shown capable of representing universal computation. The same potential co...
Natural language processing has wide coverage in application areas like machine translation , text to speech conversion , semantic analysis , semantic role labeling and knowledge representation .Morphological and syntactic processing are components of NLP which process each word to produce the syntactic structure of the sentence, with respect to its grammar .Semantic analysis follows syntactic ...
This paper describes about the work done in building a prototype text to speech system for Sanskrit. A basic prototype text-tospeech is built using a simplified Sanskrit phone set, and employing a unit selection technique, where prerecorded sub-word units are concatenated to synthesize a sentence. We also discuss the issues involved in building a full-fledged text-to-speech for Sanskrit.
Machine Translation has been a topic of research from the past many years. Many methods and techniques have been proposed and developed. However, quality of translation has always been a matter of concern. In this paper, we outline a target language generation mechanism in English-Sanskrit Machine Translation using rule based machine translation technique. The methodology for design and develop...
