The bacterial adhesive protein, FimH, is the most common adhesin of Escherichia coli and mediates weak adhesion at low flow but strong adhesion at high flow. There is evidence that this occurs because FimH forms catch bonds, defined as bonds that are strengthened by tensile mechanical force. Here, we applied force to single isolated FimH bonds with an atomic force microscope in order to test th...

Simultaneous bilateral quadriceps tendon rupture is a rare injury. We report the case of bilateral quadriceps tendon rupture sustained with minimal force while refereeing a football game. The injury was suspected to be associated with statin use as the patient had no other identifiable risk factors. The diagnosis was confirmed using bedside ultrasound.

Measuring simultaneously the force and the conductance during the formation and rupture of an atomic-sized gold contact at room temperature, we observe that deformation occurs as a sequence of structural transformations involving elastic and yielding stages and that force and conductance before rupture have definite values which are likely to correspond to a single atom contact. We measure the ...

The detection probability of rupture events in AFM force spectroscopy measurements presents a viable alternative to standard methods for extracting kinetic parameters of dissociation. The detection probability has a maximum as a function of the probe velocity where (1) the probability to form a molecular bond is independent of the probe velocity and (2) the detection of rupture events is limite...

Abstract In the present research, the behavior of 304L austenitic stainless steel in the deep drawing process has been studied at the room temperature through experimental and finite element simulation method. Magnetic method calibrated by XRD was used to measure induced-martensite. Martensite volume fraction in the various portion of the deep drawn cup under optimum Blank Holder Force (BHF) a...

Small ligands and their receptors are widely used non-covalent couplers in various biotech applications. One prominent example, the digoxigenin-antibody complex, was often used to immobilize samples for single molecule force measurements by optical trap or AFM. Here, we employed dynamic AFM spectroscopy to demonstrate that a single digoxigenin-antibody bond is likely to fail even under moderate...

Dynamic force spectroscopy probes the kinetic and thermodynamic properties of single molecules and molecular assemblies. Here, we propose a simple procedure to extract kinetic information from such experiments. The cornerstone of our method is a transformation of the rupture-force histograms obtained at different force-loading rates into the force-dependent lifetimes measurable in constant-forc...

We used an atomic force microscope (AFM) to produce an image of a mixed layer of group A and O red blood cells with a contrast based only on the measured strength of a specific receptor-ligand pair. The image was obtained by measuring and plotting for each image pixel the adhesion force between the mixed RBC layer and the AFM tip functionalized with Helix pomatia lectin. The high specificity of...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Inertial force of the bloodstream results in the local elevation of intravascular pressure secondary to flow impact. Previous studies suggest that this "impacting force" and the local pressure elevation at the aneurysm may have a large contribution to the development of cerebral aneurysms. The goal of the present study is to evaluate how the bloodstream impacting force an...
