Let $ a_0 (omega), a_1 (omega), a_2 (omega), dots, a_n (omega)$ be a sequence of independent random variables defined on a fixed probability space $(Omega, Pr, A)$. There are many known results for the expected number of real zeros of a polynomial $ a_0 (omega) psi_0(x)+ a_1 (omega)psi_1 (x)+, a_2 (omega)psi_2 (x)+...

In this paper, sharp upper limit for the zeros of the ultraspherical polynomials are obtained via a result of Obrechkoff and certain explicit connection coefficients for these polynomials. As a consequence, sharp bounds for the zeros of the Hermite polynomials are obtained.

In this contribution we deal with a varying discrete Sobolev inner product involving the Jacobi weight. Our aim is to study the asymptotic properties of the corresponding orthogonal polynomials and the behavior of their zeros. We are interested in Mehler–Heine type formulae because they describe the essential differences from the point of view of the asymptotic behavior between these Sobolev or...

We give a new short proof of a theorem relating solutions of a system of polynomial equations to the eigenvalues of the multiplication operators on the quotient ring, in the case when the quotient ring is finite-dimensional. Everyone is familiar with the representation of a curve in the plane using an algebraic equation such as X + Y 2 = 1. Algebraic geometers have learned that it is more conve...

Inequalities satisfied by the zeros of the solutions of second order hypergeometric equations are derived through a systematic use of Liouville transformations together with the application of classical Sturm theorems. This systematic study allows us to improve previously known inequalities and to extend their range of validity as well as to discover inequalities which appear to be new. Among o...

The “Diophantine” properties of the zeros of certain polynomials in the Askey scheme, recently discovered by Calogero and his collaborators, are explained, with suitably chosen parameter values, in terms of the summation theorem of hypergeometric series. Here the Diophantine property refers to integer valued zeros. It turns out that the same procedure can also be applied to polynomials arising ...

Bounds are proved for the Stieltjes polynomial En+1, and lower bounds are proved for the distances of consecutive zeros of the Stieltjes polynomials and the Legendre polynomials Pn. This sharpens a known interlacing result of Szegö. As a byproduct, bounds are obtained for the Geronimus polynomials Gn. Applying these results, convergence theorems are proved for the Lagrange interpolation process...

The family of general Jacobi polynomials P (α,β) n where α, β ∈ C can be characterised by complex (nonhermitian) orthogonality relations (cf. [15]). The special subclass of Jacobi polynomials P (α,β) n where α, β ∈ R are classical and the real orthogonality, quasi-orthogonality as well as related properties, such as the behaviour of the n real zeros, have been well studied. There is another spe...
