近年，動物園において研究が盛んに行われつつあるが，日本の動物園において園職員による研究の多くは獣医師や飼育係によって行われている。そのため，動物園主体で研究を行おうとするとしばしば直面するのが，①ノウハウがない，②予算が無い，③時間がない，という3つの課題である。これらの課題に対し，千葉市動物公園の取り組みを紹介しながら，課題解決への糸口を探ってゆく。具体的には，①研究専任職員の雇用および園内の研究実績の園全体での共有，②市予算だけでなく助成金や寄附を活用するなどの園内外の資金制度の見直し，③簡易的な行動評価方法の検討である。さらに，園内で解決できない課題を相談できる「かかりつけ研究機関」を持つことで，研究機関との連携を強化している。
