By methods of modern spectral analysis, we rigorously find distributions of eigenvalues of linearized operators associated with an ideal hydromagnetic Couette-Taylor flow. The transition to instability in the limit of a vanishing magnetic field has a discontinuous change compared to the Rayleigh stability criterion for hydrodynamical flows, which is known as the Velikhov-Chandrasekhar paradox.
We derive Kramers' formula as singular limit of the Fokker-Planck equation with double-well potential. The convergence proof is based on the Rayleigh principle of the underlying Wasser-stein gradient structure and complements a recent result by Peletier, Savaré and Veneroni.
We investigate the near-field inverse scattering problem with evanescent waves. An analytic solution to this problem within the weak-scattering approximation is used to show that the usual Rayleigh limit may be overcome even when measurements are made without phase information.
