Every year, billions of dollars are spent gambling on the outcomes of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. The current work examines how individuals make predictions for one of the most popular forms of betting, tournament pools, in which individuals must correctly predict as many games in the tournament as possible. We demonstrate that individuals predict more upsets (i.e., wins by a higher-s...

A cycle C = {v1, v2, . . . , v1} in a tournament T is said to be even, if when walking along C, an even number of edges point in the wrong direction, that is, they are directed from vi+1 to vi. In this short paper, we show that for every fixed even integer k ≥ 4, if close to half of the k-cycles in a tournament T are even, then T must be quasi-random. This resolves an open question raised in 19...

Few families of tournaments satisfying the n-e.c. adjacency property are known. We supply a new random construction for generating infinite families of vertex-transitive n-e.c. tournaments by considering circulant tournaments. Switching is used to generate new ne.c. tournaments of certain orders. With aid of a computer search, we demonstrate that there is a unique minimum order 3-e.c. tournamen...

Background:   H2-EB1 molecule which is the homolog of Human HLA-DRB1 is proposed to be associated with allergic rhinitis (AR). Construction of   H2-Eb1 knockout animal models provides a tool to elucidate the role of H2-EB1 and AR pathogenesis. Objective:   To establish the H2-Eb1 knockout model and investigate the H2-EB1 functions in   H2-Eb1 knockout mice as a model of AR. Methods: The Cre/Lox...

The placement of teams, or players, into a tournament’s brackets can have a significant impact on who will emerge as the champion. This paper provides an explanation for why cartels are not observed frequently in mineral-rights auctions even though it was not illegal for them to form. We use the techniques of mechanism design to characterize the e±cient, incentive compatible cartel and show that it can be implemented by a ̄rstprice knockout tournament with information sharing. We show, however, that bidders with the highes...

This paper proposes a method that combines tournament selectionbased genetic algorithms (GA) with simulated annealing (SA) to improve the performance of GA. Furthermore random signal-based learning (RSBL) is added as an additional GA operator to refine the solutions after mutation. The fuzzy controller for the inverted pendulum is used to verify the validity of the proposed method.
