The aims of this study were to determine the radiosensitivities of murine thymic and splenic CD4+ and CD8+ lymphocytes and to evaluate the regeneration of these cells in a model of radiation-induced hematopoietic and immune suppression. CD4+ and CD8+ cells were quantitated using two-color flow-cytometric analysis. Cells obtained from C3H/HeN mice 24 hours after exposure to 0.25-8.0 Gy (0.4 Gy/m...

Most radiation biologists/radiation oncologists have long accepted the concept that the biologic effects of radiation principally involve damage to deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), which is the critical target, as described in "Radiobiology for the Radiologist", by E.J. Hall and A.J. Giaccia [1]. Although the concepts of direct and indirect effects of radiation are fully applicable to low-LET (line...

Modulating tumor-associated macrophages from tumor-promoting M2 to tumoricidal M1 phenotype is promising for anti-tumor immunotherapy but remains challenging, especially in a controllable manner. Herein, we report radiosensitive nanoregulator (AuDAP) activatable immunotherapy. AuDAP can simultaneously recognize and bind with tumor cells by polyvalent interactions. Under low-dose medical X-ray i...

Increased yield of chromatid breaks, following in vitro G2-phase lymphocyte irradiation, can be a marker of individual radiosensitivity and cancer predisposing genes whose role is to respond to DNA damage. Mutations or polymorphisms of genes encoding DNA repair pathways may underlie the increased chromosomal radiosensitivity. However, genes that facilitate DNA damage recognition, using signal t...

Lymphocytes from an HLA-B7 DW2 homozygous multiparous woman, J.H., failed to respond in the mixed lymphocyte reaction to lymphocytes from her DW1 homozygous husband, W.H., and certain other homozygous typing cells. J.H. lymphocytes could suppress the response of HLA matched responders to W.H. This effect was shown to be radiosensitive and due to a T cell. The suppressor cell showed antigen spec...

Three cases of primary frontal sinus carcinoma are described, all three in males. Radiotherapy for these tumours can be applied either combined with surgical treatment pre, or postoperatively using supervoltage radiation, or by itself. If applied alone, it may either be a palliative measure in inoperable cases, or a curative measure in radiosensitive tumours.

Exposure of mouse hair follicles to 1200, 1300, and 1400 r of x-rays results in delay of hair growth, precocious melanogenesis, and disruption of melanocyte distribution. The diversity of greying responses obtained with 1100 to 1700 r appears to be due to inactivation of radiosensitive follicles rather than to tissue replacement or to displacement of external sheath melanocytes into the hair bulb.

Radiotherapy is a powerful cure for several types of solid tumours, but its application is often limited because of severe side effects in individual patients. With the aim to find biomarkers capable of predicting normal tissue side reactions we analysed the radiation responses of cells from individual head and neck tumour and breast cancer patients of different clinical radiosensitivity in a m...

Ionizing radiation plays a key role in the damage of genetic material. Activated mechanism of genetic material damage repair may lead to the structural modifications in the genome. Changes related to sequences amplifications or deletions are called Copy Number Variation. Aim: of the study was to identify the patterns of structural changes in genome of radiosensitive and normal sensitive cell li...
