A technology is reviewed which allows one to produce quasi-lateral 2D electron and hole gas junctions of arbitrary shape. It may be implemented in a variety of semiconductor heterostructures. Here we concentrate on its realization in the GaAs/AlGaAs material system and discuss the possibility to use this structure for optical spin detection in low-dimensional systems.

By carrying out extensive lattice regularized diffusion Monte Carlo calculations, we study the spin and density dependence of the ground state energy for a quasi-one-dimensional electron gas, with harmonic transverse confinement and long-range 1/r interactions. We present a parametrization of the exchangecorrelation energy suitable for spin density functional calculations, which fulfills exact ...

We consider the role of the third dimension in the conductivity of a quasi 2D electron gas. It is demonstrated that, if the transverse correlation radius of the scattering potential is smaller than the width of the channel, i.e. the width of the transverse electron density distribution, then scattering to higher levels of the confinement potential becomes important and the current flow profile ...

Upon increasing the electron density in a quantum wire, the one-dimensional electron system undergoes a transition to a quasi-one-dimensional state. In the absence of interactions between electrons, this corresponds to filling up the second subband of transverse quantization, and there are two gapless excitation modes above the transition. On the other hand, strongly interacting one-dimensional...
